Griffins Find Late-Inning Magic to Sweep Scots

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—Gwynedd Mercy outpowered Gordon Baseball for a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon at the Chain O' Lakes Baseball Complex. The Griffins rallied to steal away an 11-7 win from the Scots in extra innings of game one before breaking open game two with a late run, 12-5. Gordon junior Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) finished a double shy of a cycle in the opener with the Griffins.

The Fighting Scots fall to .500 at 3-3, while the Griffins improve to 4-4 and 2-2 during their Florida swing. Gordon is off on Wednesday and returns to the field on Thursday against Clark University at 9 a.m.

Game One: Gwynedd Mercy 11 – 7 Gordon

Jason Mulvey (Bensalem, Pa.) started off the game with a double for the Griffins and scored one play later David Blount (Croydon, Pa.) ushered him in with a single to left field. Blount advances on an error by the Gordon outfielder and later stole third to set up another scoring play a few moments later. The Fighting Scots had an opportunity to get out of the inning with only one mark against them, but another miscue in the field allowed Blount to score from third.

Gordon fought back to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) led off with a single to deep short and scored when Demers hit a triple to the wall in right center. Jeremy Jackson (Waco, Texas) smoked a ball up the middle of the diamond to tie the game. Jackson scored the third run of the inning on a Travis Benoit (Worcester, Mass.) single into shallow center.

Gwynedd Mercy played small ball in the second inning to tie the game at three, but Gordon came right back in the third with a solo shot by Demers to retake a 4-3 lead. Once again, the Griffins answered to tie the game in the top of the fourth when Gordon walked in a run with the bases loaded.

Caleb Bae (Canyon Country, Calif.) came in from the pen to record two strikeouts to keep the Griffins from grabbing a lead.

The heart of Gordon's lineup came through in the sixth inning, as Demers started off the inning with a single through the right side. Jackson won a footrace off of a bunt to advance Demers to second and both players made it into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Moffat (Stratford, Conn.).

Benoit added to his RBI total with a high chopper into center to easily score both Demers and Jackson.

Gordon got the first out in the top of the seventh, but three consecutive hits tied the game for the Griffins. Evan Miller (Levittown, Pa.) came off the bench to deliver a two-RBI knock into left field to send the game to extras.

Both teams loaded bases with opportunities to end it, but it was not until the ninth when Gwynedd Mercy put five runs on the board. The Griffins put five hits together to generate the four runs, including two-RBI singles by Dave Tatoian (Perkasie, Pa.) and Blount.

Demers singled in Tarr in the ninth, but Gordon could not muster any other offense in the final inning.

Sachael Sciarretta (Pottstown, Pa.) recorded his first collegiate victory, coming in to pitch the seventh inning and shutting down the Scots down the stretch. Bae pitched five solid innings, but was credited with the loss due to the big ninth inning for the Griffins.

Game Two: Gordon 5 – 12 Gwynedd Mercy

The offense continued well into game two as runs were scored in each of the first eight half innings in the contest.

Gordon scored twice in the opening inning on an RBI double by Jackson and an RBI single by Moffat. Blount hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to score Mulvey and bring Gordon's lead down to one.

The Fighting Scots grew their lead back to two runs in the second inning when Connor Rogotzke (Altamont, N.Y.) tagged home plate on a groundout by Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.).

The chaos continued in the bottom of the second with the Griffins taking a 4-3 lead thanks to an assortment of defensive miscues committed by the Scots. Justin Curtin (Washington Twp, N.J.) had an RBI single during the frame.

Rookie Alec Willey (San Diego, Calif.) tied the game in the third with his first career home run, but the Griffins went back up in the bottom half on another RBI single by Curtin. The shortstop eventually finished with four RBI in the game.

Demers' sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Rogotzke for the second time in the game, but Gordon's offense failed to score again.

The Griffins used a five-run fourth to break open the game before adding two more in the fifth for good measure.

For the Scots
  • Demers was 4-for-4 in game one with three RBI. Benoit also finished with three RBI in the game while getting on base three times. Demers had a team-high five hits on the afternoon.
  • Gordon walked a season-high 15 batters between the two games
