WENHAM, Mass.—Senior
Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) scored eight times, including the game-tying and game-winning goals to give the Fighting Scots an 11-10 win over Nichols in overtime. Gordon won for the first time in 2016 after dropping its first eight contests and completed an improbable comeback in the final minute of regulation to make it happen.
The Fighting Scots up their record to 1-8 overall and 1-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Nichols drops to a 3-6 record and 0-2 in the CCC.
The game had a playoff feel despite being only the second contest in the conference schedule for both squads. Moments of desperation were felt on each side of midfield as the game remained tight for the majority.
Gordon got off to a fast start with two goals from Evans in the first four minutes of the game, but Nichols tied the game before the buzzer at end of the first period sounded. Casey Campanale (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal before Reece O'Connor (No. Grafton, Mass.) knotted things with 3:41 to go in the first quarter.
Nichols took its first advantage of the game just a few minutes into the second when Mackenzie Martin (Merrimack, N.H.) fired home is 21
st of the year. Evans broke Gordon's 22-minute scoreless stretch with an unassisted goal, but Tyler Sikich (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) came right back to give the Bison a 4-3 lead at the half.
The game of runs continued in the second half with Evans and
Jake Martin (Watertown, Conn.) finding the twine to retake the lead for the Fighting Scots. It did not take long for the Bison to counter with two goals of their own off the sticks of Martin and Sikich to take a 6-5 lead. However, Gordon was able to get a man-up goal from
Nico Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.) with just 13 ticks in the third to make it a 6-6 game entering the final period.
Both offenses opened up in the fourth quarter and the game was tied at eight with just a few minutes to play when Gordon squandered a long man-up opportunity. Nichols turned the tables on the Scots right after when Brian Hancock (Groton, Mass.) scored a power play goal himself for a 9-8 lead.
Brad Howell (Walden, N.Y.) put the Scots in a larger hole with an unassisted strike coming from the back side of the net to put the Bison up by two scores.
Down to their final moments, Manganiello took advantage of a Nichols' penalty to cut the deficit in half. Evans assisted on the play. Face-off specialist
Peter Kovacevic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the impending faceoff and Gordon took a timeout to set up a final play.
Evans scored his seventh goal of the game with just 18 seconds remaining in regulation after beating his man and launching a shot off the turf into the webbing in the top corner.
Neither team was able to control the next faceoff and overtime was forced.
Gordon controlled the ball for much of the overtime period, registering all four shots taken. The fourth one ended up being the charm for the Scots as Evans beat the keeper low to give Gordon its first victory of the 2016 campaign.
