Castelline Breaks All-Time Record in Tough Away Loss

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—A halftime lead did not hold as Western New England exploded for nine second-half strikes to overcome a three-goal deficit against the Fighting Scots in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday. Senior Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) scored twice and assisted on four more goals to become the all-time points leader in program history, but it wasn't enough in a 13-8 loss to the Golden Bears.

Gordon looked on its way to the third overall seed in the upcoming CCC playoffs with a dominant first-half performance. The Fighting Scots outshot their opponents 15-6 and 12-5 on frame, while holding a 6-4 lead at the break. Gordon flexed its control-based game over the opening 30 minutes and forced the Golden Bears into 11 turnovers early.

Freshman Olivia McCarrick (Glen Burnie, Md.) scored three times in the period, all assisted by Castelline, as Gordon was able to build up a three-goal lead over the first 29 minutes.

Western New England's Brooke Kumnick (Granby, Conn.) and Ashley Brunner (Stratford, Conn.) each scored twice in the first half.

After Bailey Grinnell (S. Hamilton, Mass.) put the Scots up 7-4 in the opening minute of the second half, Kumnick struck in a big way for the Golden Bears. The leading goal scorer in the CCC put home five goals in the second half and Western New England was able to hold Gordon scoreless for 27 straight minutes to turn the tables on the game.

The Golden Bears did not dominate the stat sheet in the second half, but WNE converted on nine of its 10 shots on frame to put distance between the two teams. Their 9-0 run lasted just over 20 minutes.

While unofficial, Gordon (6-9, 5-3 CCC) will likely be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming CCC tournament and should head back to Springfield for a quick re-match with the Golden Bears on Saturday.

Quick Hits:
  • Castelline entered the day five points away from Bess Watson for most points all-time in Gordon history. She also became the third player ever to break the 100-assist mark over a career.
  • Gordon will meet a team it played in the regular season finale in the CCC first round for the second straight year.
