Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Drops Two in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Gordon Volleyball dropped a pair of matches at the Johnson & Wales Invitational on Saturday, finishing with a 1-3 record in the tournament. The Fighting Scots fell to host JWU 3-0 in the first match of the day before being shutout by NESCAC power Amherst in the afternoon.

Gordon drops to 3-6 on the season and suffers its first three-match losing streak since the very start of the 2015 season.

The Fighting Scots held a five-point lead in the first set against Johnson & Wales, up the Wildcats went on a 10-3 run to end the set and never looked back to stay unbeaten on the season.

Gordon fought well against Amherst, but could never fully recover from a first-set lull. The Fighting Scots rallied against NESCAC's second-best team from a season ago, going toe-to-toe with the regionally touted squad in the final two sets of the match, but Amherst found just enough offense to sneak by 25-23 in the second and 25-20 in the third. Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) and Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) both contributed double-digit kill attempts with 12 and 10 respectively.

Meghan Hokanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) were named to the JWU All-Tournament team for their efforts over the weekend. Hokanson contributed several big stops up front on defense and minimalized mistakes on offense to pace the Gordon attack, including a six kill to zero attack error ratio against Amherst. Risma contributed her usual solid numbers at her libero position, posting a season-high 26 digs in a tough loss to Connecticut College.

The Fighting Scots have three days until their home opener against Wheaton (Mass.) at 7 p.m.
