WENHAM, Mass.—Two goals over the final third of the game ushered New England College to a 2-0 victory over Gordon in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at The Quad. The Fighting Scots drop their first game since their home opener, falling to 1-2-1 on the season. NEC gets over the .500 mark at 3-2.
A quiet first half where each team only attempted one shot on goal gave way to 45 minutes of back-and-forth action from both sides. While NEC possessed heavily in the midfield during the first half, Gordon found some rhythm in the second to provide a handful of scoring chances early in the period.
Just three minutes into the second half, sophomore Hannah Bourk (Barrington, R.I.) found herself one-on-one with the keeper but pushed the ball just outside of the post to the right.
In the 61st minute, a quick counter for the Pilgrims translated into their first scoring chance of the half. Emily LePage (W. Greenwich, R.I.) took a pass from Sara Locke (Weathersfield, Vt.) stationed at midfield and cut through the heart of the Gordon defense. LePage took a few touches before sending a high ball over the approaching Jordan Bellamy (Washington, D.C.) for the first goal of the game.
Gordon kicked its offense back into gear over the next 15 minutes with several good looks at the net. A nice pass from Lexi Potter (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) found Tori Caswell (Uxbridge, Mass.) in stride behind the defense. Caswell took a dribble and blasted a drive, but it was turned away by backup keeper Kayla Pugliese (Mamroneck, N.Y.).
The Pilgrims got their insurance goal in the 74th minute when Taylor Grant (E. Providence, R.I.) got loose to the left of frame. Grant drew closer before hitting a crossing-pattern ball that tipped off the outstretched reach of Bellamy and just inside the post on the right.
Pugliese picked up her second relief win of the season, teaming up with Mackenzie Meegan (Phoenix, Ariz.) to pitch a shutout on two saves. Bellamy took the loss despite making three saves in 30 minutes of work.
Gordon will look to stay unbeaten in the Commonwealth Coast Conference on Saturday when they host Nichols at 1 p.m.
