Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Scots Conquer Colonels in Enemy Territory

MILTON, Mass.—A solid all-around effort helped Gordon Women's Volleyball to victory in its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener at Curry on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots gutted out close second set, bookended by two convincing set wins on their way to a sweep of the Colonels on Curry's home court.

Gordon gets to the .500 mark for the first time in 2016 and has put together a nice three-match win streak on its way to a 6-6 record. Curry suffers its second CCC defeat in as many nights after losing to Western New England in four sets on Tuesday. The Colonels dip to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the CCC.

The first set was close at the start with each team using small runs to keep the deficit within two points on each side. Gordon began to pull away with a 10-3 run in the middle of the set to make it an 18-11 score entering the home stretch. Curry was able to get back within five points at 19-14, but the Fighting Scots won six straight points off the service hand of Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) to go up 1-0.

A 7-2 run near the start of the second set gave Curry some momentum coming out of the first-set switch, but Gordon quickly quelled that feeling with a 7-0 run, again off the service of Petersen. Gordon used another length streak to build up a 22-13 advantage when Curry made its largest move of the match.

The Colonels went on a 9-1 run to creep back within a point of the Scots, forcing Gordon to take a timeout. The recalibration during the break worked for the Fighting Scots, as Gordon took the final three points to grab a 2-0 match lead.

Curry ran out to a 10-7 lead in the third set, but Gordon's giant swings of momentum proved too much for the home squad. The Fighting Scots put together runs of eight points and five points to close out the Colonels in three.
