DUDLEY, Mass.—Gordon Field Hockey snapped a four-game winless drought with an important victory over Nichols on a rainy Friday afternoon. The Fighting Scots earned their first Commonwealth Coast Conference win of the season, scoring three goals in the first half on their way to a narrow win over the host Bison.
The conference schedule had been unkind to the Scots during the first half through, which made getting a victory in sloppy conditions all the more important. Gordon put the first goal on the scoreboard just three minutes into the game as Rosalind Keeley (Winterport, Maine) redirected a pass from Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.) to beat the Nichols keeper.
Gordon expanded its lead to two in the 19th minute when Sabrina Jandreau (Winslow, Maine) knocked in her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Only five more minutes passed when Gordon was awarded a penalty stroke thanks to a green card infraction inside the circle. Allcroft was chosen to take Gordon's first stroke of the season and she finished it off for the all-important third goal of the game.
The Fighting Scots took their foot off the gas in the second half and were unable to showcase the same offense as the opening 35 minutes. Gordon's defense was able to pitch the shutout for 61 minutes when the home team begun to make its move.
Laura Lyons ended Gordon's shutout when she was able to poke in a rebound off of Shannon Hicks' (Scarborough, Maine) pads. The Bison crept even closer in the 68th minute with another put back goal, this time by Lauren LeMay, making it a 3-2 game.
Ultimately, Gordon was able to stop the Bison from making a full comeback and picked up its first conference win of the year.
Hicks made six saves for the Fighting Scots.
Gordon travels to Roger Williams on Tuesday in hopes of notching its second CCC win of the year.
