WENHAM, Mass.—MIT junior Emily Penn (Columbia, Md.) scored 13 seconds in the second overtime period to clinch a hard-fought 3-2 win over host Gordon College in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday night. Penn scored twice in the contest to bring the Engineers back from a one-goal deficit in the second half.
In a game that featured three ties and three lead changes, MIT had just enough to get past the upstart Scots. The Engineers had beaten Gordon seven straight years entering the night, with the Scots last win against the nationally touted program coming in 2008.
MIT started fast with a goal from Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) just 1:52 into the first half, as the forward finished off a nice feed from Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.). The Engineers continued to pressure the Fighting Scots' back line for the next few minutes of play until Gordon finally settled into a rhythm in the midfield.
Each team registered five shots in the first half, but the Engineers held a 3-2 advantage in attempts on frame. Gordon's
Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) and Cailey Talbot (Southampton, N.J.) both stopped two shots in the first half.
The Fighting Scots looked like a new team coming out of the break and immediately put the Engineers on their heels.
Kieran Thompson (Berwyn, Pa.) scored her third collegiate goal less than three minutes into the second half, firing home a loose ball in the middle of the circle.
Gordon's minute of mayhem continued just 26 seconds later when
Mackenzie Gray (Carver, Mass.) tapped in a ball off of an initial save by Talbot. After 37 minutes of trailing to their visitors, Gordon's suddenly held a 2-1 lead.
That advantage remained for 15 minutes when a temporary lapse in transition defense allowed the Engineers to get a prime look. Goetz got a good look from the side, but Hicks kicked the ball back into the fray. MIT's leading scorer coming into the night, Penn found the deflection and lofted a ball above the glove of Hicks for the equalizer.
Trouble came for the Scots again in the 57
th minute when an illegal use of stick gave Penn a penalty stroke. Penn went high in the middle of the goal, but Hicks was there to swat it away and keep things even.
Neither team had a perfect shot the rest of regulation as the two teams headed to overtime.
Both defenses had to hold steady against the press of an offensive flurry in the first extra time. Gordon had the two best chances in the frame, but Talbot came up big both times to keep the Scots from celebrating their home opener.
Karli-An Gilbert (Scarborough, Maine) hit a laser up the gut of the defense off of a penalty corner, but Talbot got enough of a pad on it to send it wide. With time dwindling in the overtime,
Sabrina Jandreau (Winslow, Maine) looked to be around Talbot, who was on the ground. At the last moment, Talbot hooked her stick back toward the goal to keep Jandreau's attempt from hitting the wood.
MIT received the opening tip in the second period and went straight down the field for the score. Some quick confusion on Gordon's back line gave Tregoning some operating room down the left side of the field and she was able to knock a pass to the center to find Penn. The junior forward one-timed the ball with a curling effect and it went just over the stick of Hicks for the game-winner.
Talbot made nine wins in net for the Engineers, who remain unbeaten on the young season at 3-0. MIT heads back home to take on Commonwealth Coast Conference favorite UNE at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Hicks also had a standout game in goal for her squad, as the senior knocked away 10 shots to keep Gordon tight with their opponents. The Fighting Scots will look to get back to .500 tomorrow when they host NEC at 7 p.m. at Brigham.
