Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Early Outburst Leads Scots to Big Win

WENHAM, Mass.—An eye-popping offensive showing in the first half sent Gordon Men's Soccer to its second win of the 2016 season, beating Maine Maritime   in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Fighting Scots turned a sluggish start on the Quad into an offensive clinic, keeping constant pressure on the Mariners' defensive third for the entirety of the half. Junior Josh Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) struck gold first with a running put back off of a quick feed from senior Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) in the 7th minute.

Danny Nkhalamba (Concord, N.H.) made it two to nothing just two minutes later on a long shot off of a failed clear by the Mariners' defensive unit.

Maine Maritime (0-2-1) got a temporary confidence boost in the 16th minute when defenseman Mason Whitaker (Westport Island, Maine) launched a ball from 35 yards out that perfectly nestled underneath the crossbar in the top right corner.

Gordon quickly responded with a goal from Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Week awardee Matt Chartier (Concord, N.H.), his third of the year. Cole's fourth assist of the year came on the play to make it 3-1.

Defenders Jerry Williams (Royersford, Pa.) and Mark Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio) both added goals on crossing balls to give the Scots a large lead. Freshman striker David Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) scored the first two goals of his career in the waning moments of the first half to give Gordon a six-score advantage.

The Fighting Scots put 18 shots on goal in the first half alone, forcing keeper Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) into some tough saves. Reeks stopped 11 balls in the first period.

Gordon controlled the pace again in the second half, but the Mariners were the only team to put a point on the scoreboard. Andrew King (Thomaston, Maine) put home a ball in the 75th minute when teammate Tom Samson (Waterville, Maine) found him in the middle of the 18-yard box without a mark.

Reeks made 16 saves while playing all 90 minutes. Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) picked up his second win of the year despite not registering a save.

Gordon outshot Maine Maritime 35-6 for the game.

The Fighting Scots are back on the pitch on Saturday when they host Roger Williams at 4:30 p.m.
