Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

MIT Controls Scots in 3-0 Sweep

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—MIT Women's Volleyball had an answer for everything Gordon threw at them its way to a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Scots on Wednesday night at the Rockwell Cage.

In the opening set, a service error brought the Fighting Scots within 7-6. However, a four-point spurt gave MIT some breathing room. An exchange of points ensued until a hitting error coupled with an ace by Fiona Tanuwidjaja (Renton, Wash.) sparked a 12-4 run to close out the set.

The Engineers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second stanza but Gordon stayed close, using a kill from Jamie Tafoya (Fort Collins, Colo.) to narrow the gap to 13-9. MIT replied with back-to-back Megan Gebhard (Howell, Mich.) kills, kicking off a 12-5 run that was capped by two kills from freshman Alexis Groark (Huntington, N.Y.).

Strong serving by junior Clare Farley (La Jolla, Calif.) turned a 3-3 tie into a 10-3 advantage for the Cardinal and Gray in the final frame. The Fighting Scots then capitalized on several miscues, helping them cut their deficit to 11-7. This was as close as it would get as MIT mounted a 14-6 run to wrap up the match.

Gordon struggled to get anything going offensive from the very start, notching season lows in points, kills, aces and hitting percentage for a match. Senior libero Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) returned to the Scots after missing the first four matches and was a high point with 21 digs on her back line.

The Fighting Scots will look to rebound on Friday when they travel to Providence, R.I. for a pair of matches against Bridgewater State and Connecticut College to kick off the Johnson & Wales Invitational.
