WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon hosted Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference play and put eight shots on goal in its 2-1 victory.
The Golden Bears (9-7-2, 7-2 CCC) started the game quickly on offense as they had two corner kicks and two shots in the first five minutes. The Fighting Scots (9-4-2, 6-2-1 CCC) responded with five shots in the next seven minutes with two being on goal.
Lexi Potter received a pass from
Asha Steele and put it past the keeper in the 32
nd minute to put Gordon up 1-0. Western New England tied the game in the 38
th minute with an unassisted goal by Jennifer Merritt. Neither team recorded a shot the rest of the half to make it a 1-1 game going into halftime.
In the second half, the teams traded possession back and forth for the first 30 minutes as the Golden Bears attempted five shots to four shots for the Fighting Scots.
Ashton Barkey broke the tie in the 76
th minute as she received a pass from Potter and shot a line drive that went into the left side of the net. Western New England had two more scoring opportunities in the remaining 24 minutes of the half.
Kali Denty saved a header shot by Hayley Gilmore in the 76
th minute and a shot by Danielle Skates with 31 seconds left to seal the victory.
Gordon will next host Wentworth in the quarterfinals of the CCC tournament Oct. 28 as the No. 4 seed. The game time will be determined later in the week.
