Potter Scores Golden Goal in Scots Upset Win Over Gulls

BEVERLY, Mass. — No. 4 seed Gordon traveled to take on No. 1 seed Endicott in the semifinals of the CCC Tournament and put nine shots on goal in its 2-1 win in overtime.

The Gulls (13-5-1) attempted two shot in the first six minutes with one shot being high and the other shot being saved by Kali Denty. The Fighting Scots (11-4-2) did not attempt a shot until the 8th minute when Ashton Barkey's shot went wide right of the goal. Neither team was able to maintain possession for long as Endicott attempted nine shots with Gordon attempting six shots in the half. In the 44th minute, Denty ran out to contest a shot by Mary Verneris and knocked her over while going for the ball. The ref called a foul on the play in the box which set up a penalty kick for the Gulls. Verneris converted the kick to put Endicott up 1-0 going into halftime.

In the second half, Gordon upped the pressure on offense as they attempted seven shots with four being on goal in the first 30 minutes of the half. Two of those shots came in the 71st minute as Asha Steele and Lexi Potter's shots were both saved by Shelby Elwell. That pressure paid off in the 79th minute as Barkey took a pass from Kiersten Klose and scored from 25 yards out on a line drive shot over the keeper to tie the game at 1-1. Both defenses tightened up in the last 11 minutes of the half as the Fighting Scots attempted two shots to just one shot for the Gulls. Neither team was able to convert which sent the game to overtime.

Verneris put a shot on target in the second minute of overtime that was saved by Denty. In the 93rd minute, Barkey put a shot on goal that was stopped by Elwell. The ball rebounded off of Elwell right to Lexi Potter who put the ball past the keeper for the game-winning goal.

Gordon defeated Endicott for the first time since the 2002 season and broke a 21-game losing streak in the series.

The No. 4 seed Fighting Scots will travel to play No. 2 seed Roger Williams in the CCC Women's Soccer Championship game Nov. 4 at a time to be determined later. It is the third straight championship appearance for Gordon and is a rematch of the 2015 championship game that the Hawks won 3-0.
