HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.—Gordon Men's Tennis opened up its spring break trip with a solid 7-2 win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday morning. The Fighting Scots took two of three doubles matches to set the tone for the match and improved to 4-2 on the season.
Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Nate Lookwhy (Westborough, Mass.) continued where they left off at the top of the Gordon lineup. The junior-sophomore duo won at first doubles easily, 8-2, before they both secured straight-set wins in singles play. Casady was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Pedro Bethlem (Braqanca, Brazil) at the top flight, while Lookwhy figured out Adam Olson (Lincoln, Neb.) 6-3, 6-2.
Gordon's second unit of Jonathan Frink (La Crescenta, Calif.) and Peter Godwin (Manchester, Conn.) labored through a tight match, but pulled it out in the end 8-6. Frink was also a 6-2, 6-0 winner at third singles over Gabriel Sellmer (Caieiras, Brazil) and Godwin took home Gordon's sixth point with a 6-4, 6-2 win at fifth singles.
Rookie Eric Kim (La Crescenta, Calif.) secured the final point of the match for the Fighting Scots by taking down Hale Breit (Lincoln, Neb.) in straight set at the fourth spot.
The Prairie Wolves got both of their points at the bottom of the lineup. Jared Scherling (Lincoln, Neb.) and Nate Adams (Lakewood, Colo.) combined for an 8-3 result at third doubles. Christian Cannon outlasted Kris Marineau (Auburn, N.H.) in three set, 6-3, 2-6 and 10-7 in the super tiebreaker.
Match Two: Elizabethtown 0 – 9 Gordon
Gordon improved its winning margin in the second match of the day by blanking the Bluejays.
The Fighting Scots cruised in doubles action with the closest match coming at the third flight. Casady and Lookwhy took care of business at the top of the lineup with an 8-3 victory. After not playing together in the morning match, Mike D'Antuono (Mapleville, R.I.) and Kim teamed up for a dominant 8-1 showing at second doubles. Frink and Godwin moved down a spot to take an 8-4 result.
Gordon claimed straight-set wins at all six flights of singles action. Frink got the first point for the Fighting Scots with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Matt Hornbaker (Ambler, Pa.) at third singles. Casady officially put the match on ice with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Alex Machalick (Mountain Top, Pa.), winning the final 10 games of the day.
Lookwhy, D'Antuono and Godwin dropped only three games combined at the second, fourth and sixth spots. Kim ended the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win at fifth singles over Nick Strobel (Woodstown, N.J.).
The Fighting Scots have a few days off before they take on Messiah for a 1:15 p.m. start.
