WENHAM, Mass.—Huge scoring efforts in the first and third quarters spurred UNE to a 23-6 win over Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday. The Nor'easters opened up an 8-1 lead after one period and never looked back for their fourth CCC win of the year. Gordon is now 1-5 in the conference.
UNE's high-scoring offense hummed to 23 goals for the second consecutive game after scoring the same amount in a win versus Maine Maritime on Saturday. The 23 goals allowed was a season-high against the Scots this season. The previous high was 15.
The Nor'easters scored the first seven goals of the game on the backs of Dan Auger (Nashua, N.H.), Tom Luttrell (Greenbrae, Calif.) and Alex Zadworny (Florence, Mass.).
Nick Palandjian (Belmont, Mass.) scored the only goal for the Scots in the opening period.
Gordon played brilliantly in the second quarter, controlling the pace of play after allowing Philip Young's (Unionville, Pa.) second goal of the game. Thor Rasmussen (Fairfax, Va.), Nate Distasio (North Reading, Mass.) and Nico Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.) tallied three consecutive goals to make it a 9-4 game at the half.
The second half was all UNE as the Nor'easters scored the first 12 goals until Palandjian scored with 9:27 remaining in regulation. Manganiello also scored a man-up goal with 21 seconds left.
The Nor'easters had 60 shots compared to just 27 for the home team. Forty of those shots were on frame as Jay Gallipo (Dover, N.H.) was forced to make 17 stops.
UNE also dominated ground balls with an eye-popping 62 and controlled face offs with a 24-to-9 advantage. Matthew Layton (Medford, N.Y.) won 14-of-18.
Auger had a game-high seven points.
