BEVERLY, Mass.--Eastern Nazarene closed out the Fighting Scots to the tune of 9-0 to clinch the top seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament. With a bye on the line for each squad, ENC did just enough to pull out all nine closely contested matches to improve to 7-1 in conference, while Gordon drops to 6-2.
The Fighting Scots were riding high into the match with an eight-match win streak, but Eastern Nazarene's momentum after knocking off top dog Nichols on Monday proved to be key. The Lions swept the doubles lineup despite trailing deep into two matches before gritting out a pair of comeback victories.
Singles was not any more kind to the home side as Eastern Nazarene seemed to have an answer at every spot in the lineup. ENC won the top two spots in straight sets, but Gordon was able to win three first sets on other courts before dropping all those matches in three.
Gordon (15-5) will have a chance to bounce back with the CCC tournament on the horizon. The Fighting Scots will host No. 6 Western New England on Saturday with a trip to Dudley to face Nichols on the line.
