Game Recap: Baseball |

Hyde Delivers Gem to Earn Split

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon and Wentworth split a Commonwealth Coast Conference baseball doubleheader in a pair of starkly different games. The Fighting Scots outlasted the Leopards in a 1-0 pitcher's duel before the Leopards returned served with a dominant 13-1 performance in the night cap.

Wentworth improves to 12-5 and 2-2 in the CCC. Gordon enters Sunday's doubleheader with Salve Regina at 5-10 and 2-2 respectively.

Game One

The two sides combined for only six hits in the seven-inning affair. Gordon parlayed a quiet first two innings into a two-out rally in the top of the third inning as Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) to set up a single by Chris Leavitt (E. Bridgewater, Mass.). On the play, both runners advanced an extra base on a throwing error by the Wentworth third baseman.

Gordon's rookie starter Morgan Hyde (Thomson, Ga.) threw a perfect four and two-thirds innings before junior Tom Elrick (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) spoiled the achievement with a single in the bottom of the fifth.

The Leopards were able to get a runner in scoring position in each the sixth and seventh frames, but Hyde was able to pitch his way out of the jam both times to earn his second win of the year.

Leavitt had a game-high two hits in three plate appearances.

Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) was tagged for his first loss of the year in three innings of work.

Game Two

Wentworth jumped all over the Fighting Scots in the early innings and never looked back in the 13-1 result.

After going hitless in the opener, Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) doubled in his first of three RBI in the bottom of the first. The junior later scored on a sacrifice fly.

The bottom fell out on the Scots in the second inning as Wentworth took full advantage of four Gordon errors. The middle of the lineup, consisting of Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.), Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.) and Weninger quickly put up six runs in the inning while chasing senior Matt Amore (Pequannock, N.J.) from the game.

Gordon had a chance to chip away at the deficit in the fourth by loading the bases with only one out, but Wentworth got the final two outs of the inning to remain unscathed.

The Leopards really put the game out of reach with three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth with the bottom of the lineup coming up with a majority of the damage. Wentworth had an opportunity to tack on even more but a double play on a liner limited them to three runs, all of which came on wild pitches or errors.

The Leopards added two more in the sixth before Demers knocked in Gordon's lone run in the seventh. The Gordon senior finished with two hits.

Wentworth piled up 11 hits with Weninger and Temte combining for four hits, six runs scored and four RBI. Owen Swanson (New Milford, Conn.) had a game-high three hits.

Aaron Denis (Dover, N.H.) improved to 3-1 on the season with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
