SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Gordon Baseball will have an uphill climb to the Commonwealth Coast Conference crown after dropping its first round matchup at Western New England on Thursday afternoon at Trelease Park. The Golden Bears built up a quick 7-0 lead in the early innings and held off everything Gordon threw at them in an 11-2 triumph.
With the win, Western New England (22-16) will take on top-seeded Endicott on Saturday at noon in Beverly. Gordon (11-21) awaits the loser of that contest in what will serve as an elimination game at 3 p.m.
Top Performers
• Sophomore outfielder Erik Lacaire (Worcester, Mass.) led the Golden Bears at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a walk, three RBI and two runs scored. Junior infielder Jared Rosenblatt (Avon, Conn.) also went 2-for-4 with a walk and one RBI, while sophomores Alex Loparco (Riverside, Conn.) and Ben LaCroix (Branford, Conn.) drove in two runs each.
• Sophomore left-hander Bob Hamel (Southwick, Mass.) got the start for Western New England and improved to 7-2 after striking out five batters and allowing two runs on five hits and five walks over six innings of work.

Morgan Hyde (Thomson, Ga.) drove in one run each for the Fighting Scots.
Western New England put a crooked number on the scoreboard four times in the game and quickly put the Fighting Scots in a big hole. The Golden Bears racked up hits early and capitalized in big moments to grab a 7-0 advantage before the end of the fourth inning. Lacaire and LaCroix were driving forces behind the large lead.
Gordon was able to put two on the board in the fifth inning, but left 10 runners on base in the game to ensure no come back.
Western New England pulled away with four more runs in the seventh, two by walk. The Golden Bears scored four of its runs in the contest either by walk or wild pitch. Gordon walked 11 in the game, creeping close to their season high, which was also against the Golden Bears in the regular season series.
