Gulls Need Pod Finale to Knock Off Pesky Scots

CCC Interactive Bracket
BEVERLY, Mass.—Gordon's quest of an improbable run through the Commonwealth Coast Conference double-elimination round came to a tough ending in the final game at Endicott. The Fighting Scots forced a final contest after winning the first game of the day 5-4, but Endicott put on the jets in game two to take the 15-0 win.

The Gulls (25-17) move on to the CCC championship series and will await the results of the Salve Regina pod on Monday.  Gordon finishes its season at 13-22 despite winning five of its final seven games to move the deepest the program has been in the tournament in over a decade.

Game One

Endicott scored three of the first four runs in the game with walks and errors playing a major role for the home side. A wild pitch on a six-pitch walk allowed
CCC Player of the Year Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.) to score easily from third. Kochiss walked four times in the game himself.

In a bizarre lineup switch in the top of the second, Matt Paulsen (Latham, N.Y.) slotted into the designated hitter role and delivered with a double past the outstretched glove at third to score Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) from first.

Endicott's theme of scoring with two outs continued in the second and fifth innings, as Nick Berno (St. Albans, Vt.) and Michael Casciano (Somers, Conn.) each contributed RBI in each respective frame.

The Gulls' 3-1 advantage held firm deep into the contest when Gordon was finally able to get to Endicott starter Colby Morris (Newburyport, Mass.) in the top of the eighth. Morris got the first batter to ground out, but three straight singles off the bats of Matt Moffat (Stratford, Conn.), Morgan Hyde (Thomson, Ga.) and Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) made it a 3-2 game.

Endicott brought in relief at this point, but Chris Leavitt's (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) bunt evened the game and kept only one out on the board. The Gulls tried to pick Leavitt off of first base, but an overthrow brought Demers all the way around from second to give Gordon its first lead at 4-3. Christian Hodge (Waltham, Mass.) extended the lead further with a single up the middle.

Gordon ran into a scary situation in the bottom of the eighth. The Fighting Scots put two outs on the scoreboard with no runners on, but four Gulls earned walks in a succession to make it a 5-4 game. Garrett Poole (Rindge, N.H.) came into the game with the bases loaded and received a brilliant catch from Hyde in left field to end the threat.

Poole gave up a single to lead off the ninth, but sent down the next three Gulls, including a swinging punch out to end the game.

Matt Amore (Pequannock, N.J.) earned his third win of the season in his final start of his career. He allowed only six hits in seven and two-thirds innings of work. Morris took the loss for the Gulls.

Daniel Quint (Wells, Maine), Paulsen and Moffat led Gordon with two hits each.

Game Two

Endicott scored early and often in game two. The Gulls scored once in the first before taking the Scots out of the game with five runs in the third and fourth innings. Endicott added four more in the fifth for a 15-0 lead.

The Fighting Scots were never able to recover from the rough start.

CCC Pitcher of the Year Kevin Gould improved to a perfect 6-0 on the year in five innings of work.
