Third-seeded Gordon College Women's Tennis welcomed the Golden Bears of Western New England to the Brigham Athletic Complex this afternoon for the opening round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament and rolled to a 5-0 win to advance to the semifinals.
Â
With No. 1 seed Endicott College having received a first round bye, the Scots will travel to meet their crosstown rival on Tuesday, October 16 for a shot at the upcoming CCC title match.
Â
No. 3 doubles pair
Caitlin Kwok and
Emily Ontiveros made quick work against their counterparts Jessica Cote (So./Groton, Conn.) and Rachel Bauer (Jr./Palmer, Mass.), completing the 8-0 sweep to get things started for the Scots. Gordon used that momentum to its advantage and never looked back as
Justine Hanson and
Gabrielle Brucker defeated WNE's No. 1 duo of Maylene LaPress (So./Bedford, N.H.) and Morgan Shrader (Jr./Burnt Hills, N.Y.), 8-2, and
Anne Carsey and
Kaelyn Hall gritted out an 8-4 victory over Kyra Palumbo (So./Albany, N.Y.) and Petra Martinelli (Sr./Vernon, Conn.) to secure the doubles sweep.
Â
Coming into singles action with the 3-0 edge, the Scots needed wins in just two more matches to punch their ticket to the semifinals. A laser-focused Hall quickly took down Cote, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 to set up the win, leaving Hanson to seal the deal for Gordon with a clean 6-0, 6-0 blanking of LaPress at No. 1.
Â
With the win the Scots improve to 7-4 overall (5-2 CCC), while WNE closes out its fall campaign at 2-7 (2-5 CCC).
Â
Beyond the Box Score
- Hall and Carsey increased their doubles win streak to eight straight.
- Said Head Coach Peter Amadon: "It is great to start off strong in doubles. Western New England always brings their best, and we knew it would take a strong effort to advance to the semifinals. We competed well."
