Hosting Roger Williams University today in a rematch of the 2017 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title game at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex, the Fighting Scots booked a pivotal 3-2 Senior Day win over the Hawks to improve to 3-2 in league play (8-6 overall).
Devin Lacroix,
Lexi Potter, and
Emily Rodriguez led the way for the Scots with a goal apiece, while
Jill Kefalas,
Asha Steele, and Lacroix added assists and keeper
Giselle Maso recorded two saves.
The Scots got their offensive gears turning early to put the Hawks on the their heels when Kefalas crossed from the right side to a waiting Lacroix, who one-timed a ball to the far post past a diving Morgan Strassburg (Fr./Longmeadow, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead just three and a half minutes into the first. RWU's Morgan Snow (Jr./Rowley, Mass.) got her first of the day at 19:03 after outpacing the Scots' back line for a near post finish, but Potter gave the Scots the edge once again off a Steele helper in the 33rd to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Despite several other quality opportunities including two headers just off frame from corners, Gordon could not find the back of the net again in the half and carried the narrow one-goal lead into the break.
With more favorable weather conditions in the second half, both teams possessed more cleanly and traded chances until Snow scored a nearly identical goal to her first at the 68:17 mark to bring the game back to a stalemate. Though the Hawks held a 4-1 shot advantage over the next 10 minutes, it was the Scots who capitalized in the 80th minute when Rodriguez floated a tough angle shot from the left side over top of Strassburg to lift Gordon to the eventual 3-2 victory.
The Scots return to CCC action as they host Nichols College on Wednesday, October 17 for a 3 p.m. kickoff. The Hawks, now 6-8 overall (3-2 CCC), face Lasell on Monday, October 15 for a non-conference tilt at 3 p.m.
Beyond the Box Score
- At 14 goals on the season, Lexi Potter has now matched her goal total from the previous two seasons combined (five in 2016, nine in 2017).
- Today marked the first regular season win for the Scots over RWU since 2012.
- Said Head Coach Chuck Breton of the win: "I was really proud how our women responded today versus a very good opponent in Roger Williams. The game went back and forth but we never panicked. Instead, we got more determined to work towards a positive result. In the last two games we had drifted a way from our GoCoWoSo style of play but today we got back on track. We defended better as a single unit and had a quality outing in keeping possession. It was an important win against a quality team and to do it on Senior Day made it extra special."
