Midfielder
Josh Beveridge scored a goal in each half to propel Gordon Men's Soccer to a 2-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory over Nichols College tonight at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex, snapping a two-game losing streak to improve the Fighting Scots to 4-2 in league play (8-6 overall).
Rookie netminder
Brody Veleber turned away two shots to earn the win for Gordon, while
Collin Surface and
Nate Boyer pitched in an assist each to the offensive effort. Patrick Porpora (Sr./Westminster, Mass.) recorded six saves in the loss for Nichols.
Beveridge notched his first of the night and third of the season midway through the first after tucking in a rebound off the bar from Surface at 24:13 for the 1-0 lead. Forward
Jarvin Ramirez nearly widened that gap just minutes before the half with a rip off the crossbar from the corner of the box, but the rebound skidded beyond the touchline to keep the game level at the break.
In the second half, the Scots had another near miss when Boyer broke in and sent a chip overtop Porpora that skipped off the bar and out of bounds at 63:38, but Beveridge found his mark just two minutes later when he finished a give-and-go with Boyer inside the box to the far post to secure a comfortable lead and eventual two-goal win.
Gordon returns to action on the road at Salve Regina University on Saturday, October 20 at 12 p.m., while Nichols has the weekend off before facing host Salve on the 24th at 3 p.m.
