Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Scots Outlast Salve In CCC Shootout, 4-3

Traveling to Newport, Rhode Island today for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup with Salve Regina and the penultimate game of the regular season, Gordon Women's Soccer outlasted the host Seahawks on a day of high-flying offense, booking a gritty 4-3 win to improve to 5-2 in the CCC, 10-6 overall.

Lexi Potter continued her offensive dominance with two goals bringing her season total to 16, while rookie Emily Rodriguez and Hannah Johnson recorded a single tally each, Asha Steele dished two assists and Kasey Hayes one. Keeper Giselle Maso turned away six shots for the win.

The Scots made their presence known early when Hayes took the ball endline on the right side and crossed it to Rodriguez, who headed the ball back to the far post beyond the reach of Salve's Carly Pala (Sr./Milford, Conn.) for the 1-0 lead just six minutes in. The Seahawks' Amanda Bentz (Fr./Mt. Wolf, Pa.) picked a good time for her first goal of the season on a solo effort at 12:23 to bring the game back to level, and SRU's offensive go-to Abby McMackin (Sr./Walpole, Mass.) tipped the scales in their favor at 19:01 with her 13th of the season to leave the Scots at a one-goal deficit midway through the half. Potter stepped up just three minutes later, though, breaking the Seahawks' back line to meet a Steele through ball and fire a perfectly composed finish to the right side netting to once again make it a tie ballgame.

Proving that the second frame was going to be just as much of a shootout as the first, McMackin took advantage of an early opportunity on an unassisted effort for the 3-2 Salve go-ahead. Though the Scots pressed offensively, it took 17 minutes before they could find the equalizer, but find it they did as a foul on Rodriguez to the left outside the area set up a direct for Gordon at the 65 minute mark. With the sure-footed Steele on the serve, Johnson was waiting on the other end to float a volley over the top of Pala and erase the gap.

Potter then rose to the occasion once again for her second of the day at 74:36, polishing off a scrum in the box to put the Scots on top in the waning minutes of action. Salve continued its push on the attack and gave the Scots a couple of scares that flitted off the crossbar, but Gordon's back line of Kiersten Klose, Monet Marshall, Sharon Curtis, and Johnson held fast to lock down the win.

The Scots travel to Curry on Tuesday, October 23 for their final regular season matchup at 4 p.m.
