In Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer action today at Western New England's Suprenant Field, the Fighting Scots let slip a 2-0 first half lead to cede their first league game of the year, 3-2, to the host Golden Bears. The loss drops Gordon to 7-5 overall (2-1 CCC) while WNE improves to 5-6-1 overall (2-1-1 CCC).
Despite WNE owning the lion's share of possession in the first frame, the Scots'
Lexi Potter took advantage of an early opportunity in the 14th minute by besting Golden Bears keeper Alex Lemekha (Jr./Stamford, Conn.) on a solo effort to give Gordon the 1-0 lead. Senior captain
Asha Steele nearly extended that lead after collecting a ball outside the area and firing a shot just beyond the reach of Lemekha, which nicked off the crossbar and out of play. Then, with netminderÂ
Jenny Deckert and the Gordon back line keeping WNE's offense at bay, Potter struck again at the 43:30 mark off a Steele assist to cushion the lead to 2-0 heading into the break.
That momentum took a 180 turn at the start of the second, however, as Allison Bruehwiler (Fr./Old Saybrook, Conn.) broke WNE's silence just two minutes in and converted a penalty kick following a handball in the box three minutes later to level the game at 2-2. The duel was on from that point forward, with both teams trading scoring opportunities (including another crossbar from Steele in the 67th minute), but it was the Golden Bears' Danielle Skates (So./Berlin, Conn.) who netted the game-winner in the 77th after a direct kick to send the Scots home with the one-goal loss.
Gordon returns to CCC action as they host crosstown rival Endicott College on Tuesday, October 9 at 3 p.m.
