The Fighting Scots laid down a command performance in tonight's Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball matchup with visiting University of New England in the Bennett Athletic Center, blowing past the Nor'easters with a clean 3-0 sweep to break .500 at 10-9 overall (2-3 CCC) on the season. The loss drops UNE to 6-13 overall, 1-3 in conference.
The match was consistent throughout, as Gordon booked nearly identical wins in all three games (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) to get back in the CCC win column.
The Scots were paced by
Mackenzie Hinds with 14 kills and
Amanda Snyder and
Jacque Fitzgerald with eight apiece, while
Ashlyn Gergins recorded 32 assists and
Jenny Curtiss had an all-around solid outing with 15 digs and a pair of aces.
For UNE, Sydney Christiansen (So./Palatine, Ill.) posted 19 assists and six kills, Katie Flynn (Jr./Merrimack, N.H.) seven kills, and Katie Marsh added 18 digs (Jr./Melbourne, Australia) to the effort.
The Scots came out of the gate with purpose to gain the early momentum, prompting UNE to take back-to-back timeouts midway through the opening game to try to stave off the Scots' assault. That proved to no avail, as Gordon continued to surge all the way to the match-opening seven-point win behind a series of standout serves from Curtiss.
After earning the first point of game two and never relinquishing the lead en route to the 25-19 win, the Scots worked to close out the match in the third while the Nor'easters fought hard to inch their way back into contention. With UNE holding the lead from the outset until the Scots tied it up at 12-12, both teams traded points and leads until the Scots pulled ahead after the 17-17 mark to seal the W.
The Scots return to action on Thursday, October 11 as they host Eastern Nazarene at 7 p.m. UNE welcomes St. Joseph's on the same night for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
