Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Scots Outlast Sharks On Day One Of Gordon Classic, 72-67

Hosting nearby Simmons College on day one of the Gordon College Women's Basketball Classic tonight in the Bennett Athletic Center, the Fighting Scots narrowly edged the guest Sharks, 72-67, to pick up their first win of the young 2018-19 season.

Guard Meghan Foley led all scorers with 26 points and added eight boards while forward Sarah Gibbs recorded an impressive 23-point, 18-rebound double-double to pace the Scots' victory. Guard Brooke Dyson also contributed a solid 14 points to the offensive effort.

On the other side, the Sharks had four players record double-digit scoring totals on the night as Rebekah Carroll (Jr./Londonderry, N.H.) and Molly Phillips (Jr./Cranston, R.I.) registered 18 and 15, respectively, to go with their six rebounds apiece and Cassandra Stapelfeld (So./Brookline, N.H.) and Francesca Corsinetti (Jr./Johnston, R.I.) each booked 11.

The Scots, now 1-2 overall, take to the court tomorrow at 3 p.m. to face the College of New Rochelle in the final game of the Classic. Simmons (0-2 overall) will duel Old Westbury at 1 p.m.

How It Happened:
  • The first two quarters were about as even as they could get, with Simmons holding the slight 34-33 advantage at the midway point.
  • The largest lead for either team in the first 20 came four minutes in when the Sharks went up by five behind a jumper from Carroll and a layup and two converted free throws from Lauren Brandeau. Dyson quickly closed that gap with a trey a minute later, though, to keep the Scots right on their heels.
  • Both teams tightened up on defense in the second frame, cutting each other's offense nearly in half and going stride-for-stride with 12 points each for the one-point halftime gap.
  • With the score locked at 36 two minutes into the third, Gordon got the go-ahead off a Gibbs jumper in the paint to take over the lead– which extended to as much as six– for the remainder of the period.
  • That lead held until two minutes into the final period when Simmons' Suzie Cosme netted one from behind the arc to start a Sharks surge that built the deficit to 62-56.
  • A pair of points from the stripe from Gibbs, though, proved to be the catalyst to the Scots' offense down the stretch, which outpaced the Sharks, 12-7, to secure the five-point win.
Beyond The Box Score:
  • Sarah Gibbs' 23 points is a new career-high for the junior.
  • Senior Laura Paquette grabbed her first career start and booked 29 minutes playing solid defense.
  • Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: "We played a gritty, determined game tonight. Our defense was stout and we played with tremendous effort and energy from start to finish. This will be the kind of game we look back on at the end of the year and talk about how much we learned from it and grew as a team. We had players who stepped up and contributed on offense, defense and rebounding. I know it's a cliché to say everyone contributed, but this was a team game from the tip to the horn."
