Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dominant Second Half Lifts Scots Over Golden Knights, 78-59

On day two of the Westfield State University Rick Martin–Holiday Inn Express Tournament, Gordon Men's Basketball utilized a staggering 30-0 run in the second frame to overcome a first half deficit and cruise to a 78-59 win over Clarkson University in the consolation game.

Garrisson Duvivier registered 16 points, 21 rebounds, and seven assists to help improve the Fighting Scots to 2-1 overall on the season, while Eric Demers added 18 points, Parker Omslaer recorded a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Noah Szilagyi booked a solid 10-point, eight-rebound outing.

On the other side, Matthew Hornak (Sr./Monroe, Conn.) scored all of his team-high 12 points in the first half for Clarkson. Jason Phelps (So./Tully, N.Y.) and Roburt Welch (So./Buffalo, N.Y.) also contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Gordon returns home to face North Shore rival Salem State University on November 20 at 7:30 p.m. Clarkson, still searching for its first win of the year, will travel to Oswego State on the same day for a 5:30 p.m. start.

How It Happened:
  • Hornak got the Golden Knights' offense fired up early in the first with three conversions from behind the arc to give his squad a 13-6 advantage four minutes in.
  • The Scots responded offensively to close the gap several times, but sharp-shooting and solid possession helped the Knights maintain their lead for the entirety of the first half, extending it to as much as 10 points before closing the frame with a 45-36 advantage.
  • The script flipped almost immediately in the second half, however, when Clarkson's offense went ice cold with eight missed shots in the first five minutes to give the Scots their comeback window.
  • Comeback they did, as the Scots held their opponent to over 12 scoreless minutes of play while netting 30 points of their own to take a significant 24-point lead before Clarkson's Matt Higgins stopped the bleeding with a free throw at 4:01.
  • That free throw proved too little too late, however, as Gordon's offense remained steady and defense allowed just seven points in the waning minutes to preserve the win.
Beyond The Box Score:
  • Garrisson Duvivier grabbed a new season-high 21 boards.
  • Noah Szilagyi's eight rebounds is a career-high for the senior.
  • The Scots have not held an opponent to under 20 points in a half since they allowed Wentworth only 16 points in the first half of their game back in 2015.
  • Said Head Coach Tod Murphy: "It was good to bounce back after a tough loss yesterday, and get a good team win. Our defense really turned the game around in the second half and paved the way for a good come from behind victory."
