Gordon College Women's Basketball welcomed the Vikings of Salem State University to the Bennett Center this evening and were dealt an 85-60 loss by the visitors. The win marked the first of the season for the Vikings, bringing their record to 1-4, while Gordon falls to 1-4 on the young season.
For the Scots,
Meghan Foley had 19 points and nine rebounds,
Brooke Dyson had 16 points, and
Sarah Gibbs added 10 points and six rebounds to aid in the effort for the home team.
Kia Fernandes (Sr./Wareham, Mass.) seemed unstoppable as she led all scorers with 31 points, while teammate Gianna Moschella (Jr./Peabody, Mass.) netted 19 points for the Vikings.
Both teams take a break for Thanksgiving before Gordon returns to action on November 26 as they travel to Trinity for a 7 p.m. tip-off while the Vikings host Brandeis on November 27 for a 7 p.m. start.
How It Happened:
- Fernandes showed her versatility early as she scored the first six points for her team to get the momentum going for the Vikings. Gordon answered back with a few quick layups of their own to keep the Vikings within an arm's reach however Brianna Rodrigues (Jr./Salem, Mass.) closed out the first quarter with eight of the Vikings 28 points.
- The Scots started the second quarter with some fire, but Salem saw nothing but net as the Vikings stretched their lead to as many as 20 points, before Gordon cut the lead to 16 after a Delaney McDonnell free throw to lead 49-33 going into halftime.
- Going into the second half, Fernandes' dominant play stumped Gordon as the Scots couldn't stop the senior who scored more than half of her team's total points in the third quarter. Foley tried to keep the Scots in it, dropping nine points of her own in the third.
- Down by 20 going into the final frame, Gordon's Megan Hasty snatched the ball from Courtney Paschal (Jr./Waltham, Mass.)Â in the first minute to bring some energy to the Scots as she dished it to Foley for two. The Scots however had no answers for Salem's high-powered offense as the visitors cruised to a 25 point victory over the Scots.
Beyond the Box Score:
- Delaney McDonnell notched a career high with four minutes for the Scots.
- The Vikings hold a 1-17 advantage when the two North Shore foes go head-to-head.
- Salem's 85 points is the most points they have scored all season.
