Opening Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play at Wentworth Institute of Technology's Tansey Gymnasium in Boston tonight, Gordon College Women's Basketball gritted its way past their hosts to a 66-58 victory to notch its second win of the season.
Meghan Foley had a team-high 25 points and 13 rebounds,
Brooke Dyson added 17 points,
Sarah Gibbs booked nine points and 14 boards, and
Laura Paquette notched a career-high six points to aid in the victory for the Scots.
The Leopards' Stephanie Mini (So./Topsfield, Mass.) matched Foley in points and rebounds with 25 and 13, respectively, Erin Morton (So./Norway, Maine) had 11 points and seven assists, while teammate Molley Duclos (So./Greenfield, Mass.) came off the bench in a big way to chip in 10 points and six rebounds.
The Scots look to keep the momentum going as they welcome CCC opponent Curry College on Saturday, December 1 for a 1 p.m. tip-off, while the Leopards continue searching for their first win of the season as they host Western New England University also on Saturday at 1 p.m.
How It Happened:
- Gordon got out to a 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter before Wentworth put the jets on for eight unanswered points, but the Scots finished the last minute of the frame with a pair of jumpers by Dyson and Foley to take a 14-10 lead going into the second quarter.
- Similar to the first, Gordon steamrolled through a nine-point run highlighted by a Paquette three-pointer to lead 23-12 with five minutes remaining. Wentworth scratched its way back, though, thanks to eight points from Mini to close in on the Scots, 28-23, going into halftime.
- The Leopards came within one after sinking two free throws and a jumper to start the third quarter, but the Scots kept grinding with a few key shots of their own to preserve the edge. Determined to keep it close, Wentworth climbed right back into contention yet again, leveling the matchup at 42-42 to close out the quarter.
- In the fourth, a Mini jumper put Wentworth up two and left the Scots trailing for the first time since the first quarter, but that was short-lived as Dyson nailed a jumper of her own to tie it up again. There next four minutes saw four lead changes before Gordon started to pull away behind the hot hands of Dyson and Foley to take the eight-point win.
Beyond The Box Score:
- Gordon has won the last three head-to-heads against CCC foe Wentworth.
- Stephanie Mini's 25-points is a career high for the sophomore from Topsfield.
- Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: "We continue to make progress and take positive steps forward in some key areas. We played with a determined effort and had some nice contributions from a lot of people. Laura Paquette and Hannah Vincent provided a really nice lift tonight and it's always nice to get big games from Meghan, Brooke, and Sarah."
