Emerson Tops Scots In 2018-19 Opener

Hosting Emerson College in their 2018-19 season-opener at the Bennett Athletic Center tonight, the Fighting Scots rallied behind strong second and fourth quarters but could not overcome the uptempo play of their guests, eventually ceding a 71-42 loss.

The matchup was the first of nine non-conference games scheduled for the Scots this season and the first of eight for the Lions.

Meghan Foley and Sarah Gibbs paced the Scots' effort with 14 points each and six and five rebounds, respectively, while Emerson's Natalie Busch (Sr./Weybridge, England), Charlie Boyle (Sr./Scotts Valley, Calif.), Natalie Clydesdale (Jr./Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Ashley Toner (So./Barnegat, N.J.) each scored in double digits to lead the way for the Lions.

The Scots take their longest trip of the year as they travel to RPI on Saturday, November 10 for a 5 p.m. tip-off. Emerson will get the weekend off before hosting Suffolk University on Monday, November 12 at 1 p.m.

How It Happened:
  • Emerson went on an 11-0 run to start the game led by Clydesdale, who had four points and added an assist and a rebound during that span.
  • Both teams' offenses stalled a bit in the first resulting in a three-minute scoring drought until Foley swished in two from the free throw line to get the action going again.
  • In the second quarter, the Scots found their rhythm to nearly match Emerson in points (13-16) thanks to nine from Foley. The strong showing closed the gap to 38-17 going into the half.
  • Gibbs went 3-3 from the paint and was solid from the free throw line in the second half, draining six of seven from the line for 12 of her 14 points.
  • Gordon finished with purpose, outscoring the talented Emerson squad, 13-11, in the fourth quarter.
Beyond the Box Score:
  • Tonight's matchup marked only the second meeting between the two schools, with Emerson taking both victories.
  • This is the earliest season-opener for Gordon in over 15 years.
