Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Foley Drops 27 To Power Scots Past Anna Maria

Gordon Women's Basketball traveled to Paxton, Massachusetts to face the Amcats of Anna Maria College in non-conference action this evening, taking home a 64-46 win to improve to 4-7 on the year. The host Amcats drop to 2-10 overall with the loss.

The Scots' "big three" of Meghan Foley, Brooke Dyson, and Sarah Gibbs took control of the night dropping 27, 21, and 14 points, respectively, with Gibbs tacking on just as many boards en route to the decisive victory.

Anna Maria spread out its points with Sierra Johnson (Jr./Brockton, Mass.) taking the lead with a team-high 16, Sienna Johnson (Jr./Brockton, Mass.) dropping eight points and five rebounds, and Shannon Hofmiller (Sr./Oxford, Conn.) tacking on five points and seven rebounds.

The Scots return to action on Saturday, December 15 as they travel to Albertus Magnus for a 1 p.m. tip-off, while the Amcats are off until January 5 when they host Northern Vermont– Johnson at 1 p.m.

How It Happened:
  • A jumper by Foley with just under two minutes left in the first extended Gordon's lead to six before Anna Maria grabbed the next six points to trail by just a single point going into the second quarter.
  • Both teams struggled to find the net as neither scored for the first two minutes of the second frame before Gordon went on a 15-point unanswered tear to take a 26-10 lead. Anna Maria once again got the final points of the quarter, but the Scots still carried the 26-15 lead going into the half.
  • Anna Maria went on a nine-point run to open the third quarter with five of those points coming from the hand of Franchesca Hammond (So./Worcester, Mass.) to bring the Amcats within four midway through the third.
  • Sierra Johnson hit a jumper with just under three minutes remaining in the quarter to tie the game at 32 all. Gibbs and Sierra Johnson traded baskets again to knot it up at 34 apiece before Foley took matters into her own hands, closing out the quarter scoring seven of the Scots' nine points to take a 43-35 lead heading into the fourth.
  • Dyson hit a pair of threes to forge a 12-point Gordon run, giving the Scots a more comfortable 18-point lead with six minutes remaining in regulation. The Scots led by as many as 21 in the frame and took the eventual 64-46 win after some solid defense turned away Anna Maria's comeback efforts.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Brooke Dyson and Sarah Gibbs recorded season highs in steals with four and three respectively, while teammate Hannah Vincent booked a career-high two blocks on the night.
  • Meghan Foley's 27 points breaks her previous season-high by a single point as she scored 26 against Simmons earlier this season.
  • Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: "This was a solid defensive effort. We defended well in the first half and then we really locked down in the fourth quarter to close out the game. We got gritty defensive contributions from everybody and we were successful on the defensive boards. Each stop was critical for wrapping up possession and getting us to the offensive end of the floor."
