Hosting top ranked Western New England at the Bennett Center this evening, Gordon College Women's Basketball outscored the Golden Bears in the final two quarters but came up short dropping their second straight Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest, 58-72.
For the Golden Bears, Emily Farrell (Jr./New Fairfield, Conn.) led her squad with 18 points and dished out seven assists, Sydney Fisher (Jr./Strattford, N.H.) netted 12 points and nine boards, while Meghan Orbann (Jr./East Hampton, Conn.) had nine points and 11 boards en route to the 14-point win to keep them a top the CCC standings.
Gordon's
Meghan Foley led all scorers with 21 points and teammate
Sarah Gibbs booked 15 points and six rebounds to aid in the effort.
The Scots take a break from CCC play until January 3 as they play three non-conference teams to finish out the year, hosting Brandeis on Saturday, December 8 at 1 p.m for their next duel.
How It Happened:
- The Golden Bears went on an 11-point run to open up the first quarter and led by as many as 14 finishing the quarter with a 20-7 lead. That would be the fewest points the Scots scored in a quarter this evening, scoring in double digits for the rest of the night.
- Gordon almost matched the visitors in points scoring 20 to WNE's 26 in the second frame, behind the steady shots of Foley and Gibbs who scored nine and six points respectively.
- Trailing 46-27 entering the third, Gordon and WNE traded buckets throughout the quarter, with Gordon holding the slight 14-11 advantage. Despite the gritty performance, the Scots were still behind by 16 entering the final period.
- After a Brooke Dyson layup to open up the fourth, the Scots were down by a reachable 14 points. However, WNE's clutch free throw shooting as well as a layup would put the visitors up by 20 with just five minutes left to play.
- Fighting until the final buzzer, Gordon scored nine points in the final three minutes to cut the Golden Bear's margin of victory to 14.
Beyond The Box Score:
- The Scots were productive off the bench, scoring a season-high 15 points tonight.
- WNE's Meghan Orbann recorded a season-high 11 rebounds, one shy of her career high, which she earned last season with 12 against Curry.
- Meghan Foley shot 100% from the foul line for the second time this season.
