Scots Split Series With Bison

WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon hosted Nichols in its Commonwealth Coast Conference home opener at the Softball Field and split the doubleheader with a 3-2 loss in eight innings and a 3-2 win.

In game one, the Bison (6-6, 1-1 CCC) got on the board first in the top of the third inning with an RBI double by Jessica Soucie. The Fighting Scots (6-13, 2-4 CCC) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as Nichols walked Sarah Ryder with the bases loaded and Caitlin Catlanotto scored. In the top of the seventh, Courtney Manarky singled to right field to drive in Erin Kelley to make it a 2-1 game. Arianna Ramsaran tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double to right field that scored Amy Bogue. Catlanotto was thrown out from right field trying to score on the play to end the inning and send the game to extra innings. Kendall Meehan hit an RBI double to right field in the top of the eighth to give the Bison a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Rose Shannon reached base on a fielder's choice, but Catlanotto was thrown out at second on the play. Gordon's next two batters struck out to seal the win for Nichols.

Ramsaran batted 2-for-3 with one RBI, a walk, and a double. Catalanotto went 2-for-4 with one run and one double. Megan Jenkerson went 2-for-3 with one double.

Catlanotto pitched all eight innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out a career-high 12 batters.

In game two, Meehan hit a solo home run in the top of the first to put the Bison up 1-0. Cara Mayhew added another run in the top of the third with a RBI single to left field to make it a 2-0 game. In the bottom of the fourth, Lily Rivera hit an RBI single to centerfield that drove in Ramsaran to cut the lead to one run. Jenkerson tied the game in the top of the fifth with an RBI triple to right field that drove in Karissa Hatchell. The Fighting Scots held Nichols without a hit in the sixth and seventh innings and forced them to leave two runners on base. In the bottom of the seventh, Jenkerson hit another triple with one out to put a runner in scoring position. Shannon was walked the next at-bat to put runners at first and third with one out. Catalanotto hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Jenkerson and win the game for Gordon.

Jenkerson went 2-for-4 with one run and her second career game with two triples. Rivera batted 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Jasmine Mullally pitched all seven innings and struck out a career-high five batters.

The Fighting Scots next host Endicott in CCC action April 9 at 3 p.m.
