Gordon Women's Basketball welcomed The University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play this evening battling for each point, but the Nor'easters pulled away after a fourth quarter surge to take the 73-52 win over the Fighting Scots.
For the Scots,
Sarah Gibbs was a force to be reckon with, netting 18 points and grabbing 16 rebounds,
Brooke Dyson added 12 points, while
Abby Vampatella had nine points and six rebounds in the effort.
The Nor'easters were led by Sadie Nelson (Jr./Windham, Maine) who notched a game-high 22 points, Sierra Tartre (So./Kennebunk, Maine) added 17 points and six boards, while Jocelyn Chaput (Jr./Nashua, N.H.) had 11 points en route to the victory for the visitors.
The Scots aren't back on the hardwood until January 30 when they welcome Wentworth for a 5:30 p.m., while UNE is back in action on January 24 as they travel to Middlebury for a 5:30 p.m. start time.
How It Happened
- The Scots had some good mojo going early as Dyson and Vampatella sunk back to back shots from three-point land to take the 6-2 lead. Gordon's stout defense and sharp shooting kept UNE trailing until Allie Goodman (Fr./Durham, Maine) hit a three to take the 13-11 lead with 1:46 remaining. Gibbs tied it back up, but Chaput regained the lead for her squad with a three to take the 16-13 lead going into the second frame.
- Another Goodman three in the second gave the Nor'easters the 21-13 edge just 30 ticks into the quarter. The Scots held their own going on a 6-2 run to close out the first half, trailing 27-32 going into halftime.
- Five straight points behind Gibbs knotted it up at 32-all three minutes into the third. A pair of five-point stretches for UNE gave them the boost they needed to grab the 49-41 lead going into the final quarter.
- UNE went on a 13-point run in large part due to eight straight made free throws to take a 22-point lead midway through the quarter, never looking back en route to a 73-52 victory for the Nor'easters.
Beyond The Box Score
- Sarah Gibbs' 16 rebounds was just two short of her season-high of 18 which she recorded against Simmons earlier this season.
- Laura Paquette grabbed a career-high four rebounds tonight.
- UNE's win snaps a two game losing skid for the Nor'easters after loses to Endicott and Roger Williams.
