For the first contest of 2019, Gordon Men's Basketball traveled to Biddeford, Maine to face the Nor'easters of the University of New England and continued their winning ways with a 110-90 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win. The Fighting Scots improve to 4-0 in conference with their 11th consecutive win.
Gordon's star-studded cast consisted of three players with 20 points or more as
Eric Demers led all scorers with 25,
Noah Szilagyi had 24, and
Parker Omslaer put up a career-high 20. Senior
Garrisson Duvivier was one assist shy of a triple double with 17 points, 17 boards, and nine assists to aid in the Scots' 20-point win.
Â
UNE's efforts were led by Alex Kravchuk (So./Mansfield, Conn.) who had a team-high 19 points, while Ryan Beatty (Sr./Rochester, Mass.) added 17 points for the home team.
Â
How It Happened:
- The Scots opened up the first half with an 8-0 run and doubled up the Nor'easters with a 19-8 lead within the first five minutes of the contest.
- Gordon led by as many as 26 points and took an eventual 67-43 lead to end the first after a half court buzzer beater from Josh Crutchfield. Demers caught fire scoring 20 points in the first half alone.
- A scrappy UNE team put pressure on the Scots in hopes of climbing back into contention in the second frame, picking up 11 quick points with just under seven minutes to go in the half behind back-back threes to cut the lead to 14.
- The Scots, however, answered back with some offense of their own to maintain their double-digit lead. Szilagyi found his sweet spot from behind the arc, sinking six out of seven shots.Â
Beyond The Box Score:
- Noah Szilagyi's 24 points is a new career-high for the senior, eclipsing his previous career-high from earlier this year set against WNE.
- The Scots' 67 points in the first half is the most they've score in a single half this season.
- Said Head Coach Tod Murphy: "We played a tremendous first half of basketball and thankfully it was enough to carry us through to the win over a scary UNE team. It got pretty sloppy in the second half, but they are a very difficult team to play against with their running and pressing style of play. The bottom line is that we got a 20-point conference road victory."
