In an afternoon Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Quarterfinal matchup at the Brigham Athletic Complex, Gordon College Women's Tennis defeated the visiting Golden Bears of Western New England by a score of 5-2 to advance to the CCC Semifinals.
The Fighting Scots' No. 3 doubles duo of
Anna Mullane and
Abigail Graves cruised to an 8-1 win over WNE's Janet Martinelli (So./Vernon, Conn.) and Kyra Palumbo (Jr./Albany, N.Y.), giving the Scots the quick 1-0 lead. Shortly after court three finished,
Emily Ontiveros and
Jordyn Maddex made it 2-0 in Gordon's favor after the No. 2 doubles partners bested Jessica Cote (Jr./Groton, Conn.) and Rachel Bauer (Sr./Palmer, Mass.), 8-0. Gordon's
Anne Carsey and
Madison West found themselves down 5-0 early before putting on a gritty performance to battle and keep them in the hunt. However, WNE's Maylene LaPress (Jr./Bedford, N.H.) and Morgan Schrader (Sr./Burnt Hills, N.Y.) rallied and closed out the match with an 8-7 (7-3) win, giving the Golden Bears their first tally of the day.
The Golden Bears tied it up at 2-2 as Schrader won the first singles matchup against West, 6-1, 6-1. The Scots, however, took care of business as Maddex, Carsey, and Mullane won the next three sets to solidify the victory for Gordon.
With the win, the Scots advance to the CCC Semifinals on Tuesday, October 22 as they take on the No. 1-seeded Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts.Â
