Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Foley, Gibbs Pace Scots To OT Win Over Emerson

Gordon College Women's Basketball traveled into Boston this evening to take on the Lions of Emerson College at the Brown & Plofker Gymnasium. The Fighting Scots earned the hard fought 75-72 victory over the Lions, improving to 2-0 on the season while Emerson evens out at 1-1.

Emerson's efforts were led by Natalie Clydesdale (Sr./Pittsburgh, Pa.) who had 25 points and nine boards and Kailee Yan's (Jr./Mercer Island, Wash.) 16 points.

Meghan Foley led the charge for the Scots, dropping 30 points and grabbing eight rebounds, Sarah Gibbs dominated the boards with 22 rebounds and 17 points, and freshman Madison Wynbeek had 11 points and seven rebounds on the night.

How It Happened
  • Gibbs was a force to be reckoned with in the first quarter, scoring seven of the Scots' first 10 points to build a 10-7 advantage midway through the first. Gordon led by as many as seven before taking a 19-14 lead heading into the second frame, with Gibbs responsible for 11 of those points.
  • Emerson's Yan drained a three to knot it up at 22-all before the Lions went on top by four with just under three minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • However, the Fighting Scots didn't back down, closing out the quarter on an 8-0 run to take the 33-27 advantage going into the break.
  • The Scots came out of the break on fire, outscoring Emerson, 12-3 en route to a 15-point cushion with 5:47 left in the third. Emerson, however, cut the deficit to three (49-46) heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Lions were able to tie the Scots three times in the fourth quarter but were not able to overtake the lead at any point. Then, knotted at 62-62, Foley nearly ended it with a three at the buzzer, but the potential game-winner rattled out to send the game into extra time.
  • Yan hit her third three of the game to put her squad on top by one early in overtime, but that was the only lead Emerson saw as the Scots outscored their opponents 13-10 in the frame to take the 75-72 victory.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Sarah Gibbs' 22 rebounds was just two shy of tying her own Gordon College Women's Basketball record of 24. A feat that she reached on January 29, 2019.
  • Tonight's win marks the first victory for the Scots over Emerson, as the Lions claimed the previous three meetings.
  • Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: "We had contributions from a number of different players tonight but it's evident that Sarah Gibbs and Meghan Foley are just playing at another level right now. They're great representatives of what senior leaders and captains should look and play like. They understand everything we're trying to do and can simply make plays; they secure key rebounds, play tremendous defense, score in unique ways and finish at the FT line. They're playing at a really high level and our team has done an excellent job of following their lead."
