On opening night of the Gordon College Classic, Gordon College Women's Basketball started off hot, but the visiting Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) Mariners battled back to a 52-50 win over the Fighting Scots. With the win MMA improves to 3-3 while the Scots drop to 3-1 on the season.
For the Scots,
Meghan Foley had 20 points and 10 rebounds,
Olivia Gagnon scored 14 points, and
Serianna Anderson netted eight points in the effort.
The Mariners were paced by Lauren Plissey (So./Hermon, Maine) who recorded a game-high 22 points while grabbing 11 rebounds and Melinda Ogden (Sr./Searsport, Maine) who scored 10 points.
How It Happened
- Five different Fighting Scots found the basket en route to a 10-0 Gordon lead with 3:12 to go in the first. Gagnon then closed out the quarter netting seven of Gordon's 10 points to take a 20-5 lead heading into the second frame.
- The Mariners found their groove in the second, outscoring the Scots 18-7 to cut Gordon's lead to 27-23 going into the break.
- Plissey gave her squad the first lead of the game after an "and one" to put her team up 30-29 three minutes into the third. The remainder of the third saw five lead changes with Gordon taking the one-point lead heading into the fourth.
- With the game knotted at 48-all, Foley hit a pair from the charity stripe to give the Scots a 50-48 lead, however Ogden hit a jumper from three-point land to take the 51-50 edge with 36 seconds left in regulation. The Mariners made it a two-point game with 16 seconds left. The Scots tried to tie it up at the buzzer but the Mariners' defense held strong to take the 52-50 victory.
