Scots Stun Gulls In 62-60 Win

In their final tuneup before playoffs, Gordon College Women's Basketball pulled off a historic 62-60 upset win over Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular season champion Endicott College this afternoon at the Gulls' Post Center. As the No. 7 seed for the tournament, the Scots (8-17 overall, 5-11 CCC) travel to face No. 2 University of New England on Tuesday in the opening round.

Abby Vampatella and Brooke Dyson tallied a team-high 17 points each, Sarah Gibbs chipped in a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Alisha Henderson rounded out the scoring for the Scots with 14 points in the Scots' victory.

The Gulls' Emily Pratt (Jr./Gardner, Mass.) had a game-high 26 points, Mikaela Rogers (Jr.Haverhill, Mass.) had 12 points and eight boards, while Shannon Gilbert (So./Easton, Conn.) netted 11 points in the effort.

How It Happened
  • The Scots came out the gates with high energy, marching to 14-3 lead to open up the first. A potential 14-0 run was only slightly interrupted by a Gilbert three, making it 8-3, before the Scots regained their offensive magic.
  • Pratt tried to get her squad in rhythm offensively, closing out the first with a shot from downtown to cut the lead to 18-10 going into the second frame.
  • A huge 17-point lead from the underdog Scots midway through the second was the biggest lead of the game. That cushion allowed the Scots to survive a 10-point run from the Gulls to close out the half, taking a 34-27 lead.
  • Pratt, Rogers and Gilbert worked together to tie it up at 40-all with 4:17 to go in the third. A made freebie from Pratt put Endicott on top for the first time in the game, 41-40. The score was knotted up two more times in the third before Dyson hit a jumper with one second left on the clock to take the 48-46 lead going into the final quarter.
  • Both teams traded buckets, with Gordon winning the slight advantage until Catie Lipscomb (Sr./West Springfield, Mass.) put her Gulls up by two after a successful made "and one" with 6:19 remaining.
  • The Gulls held onto the lead for just over five minutes, until Vampatella connected from three-point land to take the 61-60 lead with 1:06 on the clock. After a flurry of timeouts and substitutions, Laura Paquette came up huge for the Scots coming up with a timely steal with 43 ticks left to give her team an opportunity to ice the game. Vampatella hit a foul shot with 21 seconds left to give the Scots a two-point lead and to an eventual statement victory over Endicott in Gull territory.
Beyond The Box Score
  • This afternoon's win marks the Scots first win over the Gulls in almost exactly 14 years (February 24, 2005).
  • Abby Vampatella has scored in double-digits in six straight games, hitting a season-high 17 points in back-to-back games.
  • Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: "Our players just played the grittiest and most determined defensive game of the season.  Their focus on the details of the scouting report and poise on both ends of the court were difference makers in the game. We withstood some big runs and overcame deficits but every player stepped up to contribute in key moments, whether it was energy from our bench, timely help defense, a big rebound or diving on the floor to secure a loose ball. This was a great team win and tremendous way to close out the regular season."
