Colonels Catch Fire In Second Half To Overthrow Scots

Gordon College Women's Basketball hit the road again tonight for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup with Curry College and, despite a gritty first half, lost traction in the second to concede a 63-42 loss to the host Colonels.

Abby Vampatella paced the Scots with 15 points and five rebounds, Brooke Dyson and Alisha Henderson had eight points and seven points respectively, while Sarah Gibbs chipped in eleven rebounds in the effort.

Amanda Leal (Fr./Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Peyton Perine (Fr./Fairfax, Va.) led the way for the Colonels, scoring 19 points each, while Emily Irwin (Sr./Billerica, Mass.) added 15 points and eight boards in the Colonels' second half surge.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, February 9 with the Scots hosting Salve Regina for Senior Day while Curry travels to Wentworth for a 1 p.m. start time.

How It Happened
  • The Scots took an early 7-4 lead with Vampatella netting five of those points before the Colonels marched ahead 11-7 with just over four minutes left in the first. Gordon hit back-to-back jumpers to regain the slim 13-11 lead, but the pattern continued as Irwin tossed in a layup to tie it back up at 13-all to close out the first quarter.
  • Perine recorded the first five points of the second to take an early 17-13 lead. Rattling in a pair of jumpers from three-point land were Dyson and Vampatella to get back on top with just under six minutes left on the clock.
  • Curry tied it up two more times in the quarter, but the Scots went 3-4 at the charity stripe to take a 27-23 lead going into the break.
  • Gibbs wanted to join in on the scoring, as the current CCC Player of the Week got the first two buckets of the third quarter giving her squad an eight-point lead early. However, the rest of the third would be all Curry, as the Colonels went on a 17-point run to lead 40-31 with just under a minute remaining. The Scots got some back off of a trio of free throws, but the Colonels took a 10-point advantage going into the final frame.
  • Henderson hit a three-pointer a few ticks into the fourth to cut the deficit to seven, but the duo of Leal and Irwin combined to score 12 unanswered points en route a comfortable 21-point lead which was good enough to take the eventual 63-42 win over Gordon.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Abby Vampatella has now scored in double-digits in each of her last three games.
  • With the win, Curry swept the season series with the Scots for the first time since the 2015-2016 campaign.
  • Curry has scored exactly 63 points in five of their games this season going 3-2 in those contests.
