Scots Drop Heartbreaker To Ursinus In 10 Innings

Gordon College Baseball fought in a 10 inning battle with an 8-9 loss against Ursinus College on Sunday night. The Bears and Fighting Scots' offense came alive in a heavy scoring matchup.

The Scots are off today, March 11, and will get back on the field tomorrow as they face Beloit for a nine inning contest.

How It Happened
  • The Bears bolted out to a 2-0 lead early in the first after Dom Fiorentin (Jr., Ocean View, N.J.) set the tone with a lead-off triple. The Fighting Scots got one back after Sam Schetelich led off the bottom half of the second with a double and eventually scored after Christian Hodge knocked him in.
  • Ursinus added another tally in the top of the third, but Gordon took advantage of some Bear miscues to plate another pair of runs to tie it at three.
  • With two outs in the top of the fourth, the Bears scored three times to double up the Scots, 6-3. The chase continued with Hodge and Mike Oley crossing home to trail by one.
  • The score stayed 6-5 with Ursinus having the slight edge until the Scots took the first lead of the game, 7-6. Nevertheless, the Bears' aggressive base running put them back up, 8-7 heading into the bottom of the eighth.
  • With their rally caps on, the Scots did whatever they needed to tie it up again. Alec Willey wore a pitch to get on the bases and eventually scored tying it up at 8-8 heading into the final inning.
  • Extra innings were necessary as neither team could muster up offense in the ninth. Ursinus' Will Peiffer (So./Downingtown, Pa.) hit a deep fly ball to drive in Mike Stanziale (Jr./North Haledon, N.J.) which ended up being the winning run.
Beyond The Box Score
  • The Scots' 12 hits are the most they've had in a single game this season.
  • Rookie, Mike Oley, had a career-high two hits.
