Owls and Scots Split In Spring Training Doubleheader

Facing Westfield State University for the third year in a row at the PFX Spring Games, Gordon College Softball and the Owls split this morning's twin bill. Gordon took the first game, 9-1 and the Owls won 2-1 in the second game.

The Fighting Scots close out their spring training trip with a pair of games tomorrow evening, March 15 against Lakeland at 3:45 p.m. and Bowdoin with a first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

Game One:
  • Four hits in the top of the first provided all the runs the Scots would need to soar past the Owls. Megan Jenkerson, Karissa Hatchell, and Arianna Ramsaran each ripped a double in the inning en route to a early 3-0 lead.
  • With two outs in the bottom half of the inning, Owl's Bri Tortora (Sr./Worcester, Mass.) crossed the plate thanks to a Caitlin Hughes (Sr./Hanson, Mass.) double to left field, putting Westfield on the board.
  • Caitlin Catalanatto led off the top of the third with a single and later scored, advancing to third after Ramsaran's second two-bagger of the day, and crossing the plate on Lily Rivera's single to the left side.
  • An inning later, the Fighting Scots' first five batters hit five consecutive singles, platting four runs taking a commanding, 8-1 advantage.
  • In the rop of the sixth, the Scots' lead-off batter, Rivera, singled her way to first and later scored from second after Meredith Kercher laced a timely line drive up the middle to put the Scots in a mercy-rule situation going into the home half of the inning. Gordon did not allow a runner to past first, taking the mercy-rule win, 9-1.
  • Catalanatto went the distance for the Scots, striking out seven, picking up her third win of the year.
Game Two:
  • Being designated the away team in the second game, Westfield jumped on the board early scoring a pair of runs. Lindsay Cordopatri (So./Walpole, Mass.) earned a lead off walk and touched all the bases to get the first fun across. With two outs, Karly Mastello (Sr./Ruddell, Mass.) tripled her way on a sharply hit ball to left center, scoring Tortora for the game's second tally.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Catalanatto moved to third after a successful Emma DuBois sacrifice bunt to put her 60 ft from cutting the lead in half. With two outs in the inning, Kaelie Mercado drove a line drive up the middle to plate the Scots' first run of the game. However, that was all the offense either team could muster as the Westfield State Owls took the 2-1 win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • The Scots and Owls have gone 2-2 in their head-to-head matchups for the past three seasons.
  • Caitlin Catalanatto posted a season-high seven strikeouts in the game one victory.
  • With a pair of RBI's in game one, Arianna Ramsaran now has a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) leading eight RBI's on the season.
