Scots Bats On Fire In DH Sweep Over Newbury

Gordon College Softball returned to the diamond this afternoon to host Newbury College in a non-league contest where the Scots won decisively, 22-1 and 8-2, to improve to 8-6 on the season.

The Fighting Scots return to action tomorrow to open Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play at Wentworth Institute of Technology's Sweeney Field for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.

Game One
  • As the designated away team for game one, Gordon got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. An inning later, the bats started to get hot despite the cold weather as the Scots busted the game wide open to take an 8-0 lead thanks to six hits, capped off a Lily Rivera two-run homer.
  • Arianna Ramsaran joined in on the hit parade in the third as the sophomore skyrocketed a shot over the center field fence to make it 11-0.
  • Newbury got on the board in the bottom of the third to break the silence, but the Scots answered back mightily in the top of the fourth, crossing the plate 10 times thanks in part to Kristen Brown's grand slam over the left field netting to mount a 21-1 lead. Gordon added another for good measure in the top of the fifth to secure an eventual mercy-rule victory, 22-1.
Game Two
  • Switching it up in the second with Gordon as the home team, Megan Jenkerson tied the Gordon College career home run record to lead off the bottom of the first, as the senior laced her 17th career dinger to put the Scots on the board.
  • Meredith Kercher made it 3-0 in the bottom of the second after the lefty slapper drove a single down the left field line to bring Rose Shannon home. Gordon added another two runs in the following inning to make it a 5-0 game.
  • The Nighthawks strung a few hits together in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to three but the Scots got those two runs back and plus another to take a 8-2 edge heading into the top of the fifth. The game was called due to darkness midway through the fifth with the Scots taking game two by a score of 8-2 to sweep the Nighthawks.

Beyond The Box Score
  • The Scots' 22 runs in game one is the most they have scored in a single game since they beat Wentworth by a score of 21-6 in 2015.
  • Kristen Brown hit her first career grand slam in game one.
  • Gordon doubled its 2019 season home run total after sending four dingers over the fence in today's DH.
