Game Recap: Softball |

Scots Nab Game One, Drop Game Two At Salem State

Gordon College Softball traveled to Salem State to take on the Vikings in non-conference action this afternoon. The Fighting Scots took home the first victory of the day with a score of 7-2, only to be matched by the Vikings in the second game losing 7-5.

The Fighting Scots enter back into Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action as they host Curry College for a doubleheader Friday, April 5, for a 2:30 p.m. start.

Game One
  • The Vikings got on the board first when Luciana Mastromatteo (Fr./Peabody, Mass.) drove in Dominique Del Vecchio (Jr./Stoneham, Mass.) to give them the 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first.
  • The Scots answered back in the top half of the third when sophomore Lily Rivera hit a two-run shot over the right field fence giving the Scots the 2-1 lead, until Chloe Manousos (Sr./Lowell, Mass.) tied it up in the bottom half of the inning with a dinger of her own to bring the game to a stand still at 2-2.
  • It was the Scots game from there as they finished strong crossing the plate five more times off of seven hits to bring home the 7-2 win.
Game Two
  • The Vikings started game two in similar fashion as Mastromatteo brought in a run to give them the 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Action did not pick up again until the bottom of the fourth when two runs scored off a ball that was sent to the outfield, extending Salem's lead to three. The bottom of the fifth would look the same for the Vikings as they scored four runs off of four hits, to hold a commanding 7-0 lead.
  • The Scots got on the board in the sixth when Rivera doubled to center field, scoring Karissa Hatchell. Caitlin Catalanotto would also cross the plate to bring the score to 7-2.
  • A double to left field from rookie Gabby Hunt would fire up the Scots' offense as it brought home fellow freshman Emma Dubois to start the seventh. The Scots started chipping away at the Vikings lead and scored two more runs in the seventh but it would not be enough as they fell short to the Vikings in the 7-5 loss.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Sophomore Lily Rivera hit two doubles in game two to give her nine doubles on the season, which ties her for first with doubles in the CCC.
  • Senior Megan Jenkerson and freshmen Emma Dubois and Gabby Hunt all hit doubles in game one. Hunt's double was the first of her collegiate career.
