Gordon College Softball made history in a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Lasell College this afternoon, breaking the season wins record (16) after taking game one, 7-4, and completing the sweep with a 9-1 mercy rule victory in game two to improve to 17-17 on the year.
The Fighting Scots are back on the diamond on Saturday, April 27 as they host Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Western New England University in a pivotal matchup with postseason implications at stake.
Game One
- Megan Jenkerson put the Scots on the board in the first after tripling to the right side and using her speed to come home on a passed ball.
- Neither team crossed the plate for the next two innings before Lasell tacked on three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Laura Bieren got one back in the home half of the inning as the junior laced a double to send Lily Rivera home, cutting Lasell's lead to one.
- Then, with the bases juiced in the sixth, Bieren stepped up to the plate and belted a grand slam over the center field fence to go back on top by four.
- That was all the Scots needed as Lasell was only able to tack on one more run in the top of the seventh to leave Gordon on top, 7-4.
- Kristen Brown got the win in the circle for the blue and white, allowing just one run in 3.1 innings of work.
Game Two
- Jenkerson gave the Scots the lead in the third with a two-run shot over the left center fence to double up Lasell, 2-1. Brown matched that swing with a homer of her own on the Scots' next at bat to give them a two-run cushion.
- Rose Shannon led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo-shot to left center to keep the home run parade marching before Caitlin Catalanatto hit the Scots' fifth dinger of the afternoon to widen the gap to six.
- Looking to finish the game early in the bottom of the fifth, Bieren secured the eight-run win by sending a double up the middle to bring Jenkerson and Brown home.
Beyond The Box Score
- Megan Jenkerson became Gordon Softball's all-time career home run leader, hitting her 18th in game two.
- Laura Bieren booked her first career grand slam in game one, while Rose Shannon hit her first career home run in game two.
- The Scots' four home runs in game two is a new Gordon single-game record.
