Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second Half Surge Propels Scots Past Lasers, 4-1

Hosting Lasell University this afternoon on day one of the Gordon College Tournament, the Fighting Scots' women's soccer squad exploded offensively in the second half to overcome an early deficit and surge to a resounding 4-1 season-opening win over the visiting Lasers.

The Scots were well-rounded on the offensive end as four different scorers put their names in the book en route to the W.

Both teams have a day's rest before getting back on the pitch for day two of the tourney, as the Lasers travel down the road to nearby Endicott College and the Scots play host to Ithaca College on Sunday at 1 p.m.

How It Happened
  • Lasell drew first blood less than two minutes after the opening whistle as Sophia DiPlacido (So./Hudson, Mass.) collected a through ball from teammate Serena Speight (Fr./Biddeford, Maine) in the Scots' backfield and slipped the ball past Gordon keeper Kali Denty for the early 1-0 lead.
  • Despite settling in and controlling much of the play for a 14-3 shot and 4-1 corner advantage in the remainder of the half, the Scots were unable to find the back of the net and went into the half trailing by one.
  • That all changed in the 62nd minute, however, as rookie Calla Ashley received a touch pass from Emily Rodriguez outside the right of the box floated a long range ball overtop the stretched hands of Lasell keeper Angela Sanzari (Fr./North Haven, Conn.) to make it a 1-1 ballgame.
  • Just three minutes later, senior captain Devin Lacroix one-timed a short corner from Ashley to roof Sanzari and give the Scots the lead on what proved to be the eventual game-winner.
  • With momentum on their side, the Scots continued to dominate play on the offensive end, as junior Kyra Skurcenski tucked a ball to the far right post from just outside the center of the area for the 3-1 lead at 77:22. Senior captain Lexi Potter then added one for insurance at 84:05 after tracking down a Christin Redding through ball and out-muscling a Lasell defender to fire home the Scots' fourth and final tally of the day.
  • Gordon's defense anchored by Kasey Hayes, Monet Marshall, McKenna FellerSavannah Metz, and Denty was stingy on the day, allowing just three shots on goal in the victory.
