Scots Pick Up Tenth W Capped Off By Gibbs' Record-Breaking Night

Gordon College Women's Basketball continued Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play by welcoming the Salve Regina Seahawks this afternoon at the Bennett Center, defeating the visitors by a score of 70-53. With the victory the Fighting Scots improve to 10-6 and 5-3 in league action while the Seahawks drop to 1-15 and 1-6 in CCC action.

For the Scots, Meghan Foley paced the offense with 30 points, Sarah Gibbs brought down 15 boards while tacking on 11 points, while Madison Wynbeek had 14 rebounds and 11 points.

Torie Scorpio (Sr./Cranston, R.I) and Mary Rorke (Jr./Norton, Mass.) netted 16 and 15 points, respectively, while Megan Henaghan (Fr./Whitman, Mass.) added seven rebounds and six points.

How It Happened
  • With just over two minutes left in the first quarter, Gibbs drove to the basket getting the bruise and the bucket to put the Scots up by nine. Foley closed out the frame scoring her 11th point of the first quarter point at the charity stripe to take the 10-point lead going into the second.
  • The Seahawks hit a few quick baskets to cut the deficit in half before Jess Wall went 2-2 from the free throw line and Megan Hasty drained a three to regain the 10-point lead. Gordon took a commanding 36-19 advantage heading into the break.
  • One minute into the third quarter, Gibbs pulled down and offensive board to make her the Gordon Women's Basketball's All-Time Leading Rounder.
  • A jumper form Scorpio with 2:55 left in the third made it a nine-point game, however, the Scots hit a pair of jumpers down the stretch to go up by 14 points.
  • The Scots led by as many as 21 in the fourth before securing the 70-53 victory.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Sarah Gibbs now has 916 career rebounds during her tenure as a Fighting Scot.
  • Meghan Foley eclipsed the 1,500 career point threshold today and currently has 1,516 points.
  • Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: "This game was really special because we reached two milestones that demonstrate how much the program has grown in the last few years.  First of all, with her double-double tonight, Sarah Gibbs became Gordon's career leader in rebounds.  Her relentless pursuit of the ball has been such a gift to this program.  The work ethic, consistency and approach to the game she exhibits are exemplary traits that players who aspire to compete at the college level should possess, so it's especially gratifying to see her acknowledged for a record that demands those qualities. The second thing that stands out is that tonight's win allowed us to achieve double figure wins for the first time in fifteen years.  This achievement speaks to the incredible work each player has put into this season but particularly to the commitment and relentless effort of our four seniors.  It's been so rewarding to celebrate this milestone knowing there is so much more to come this year and in the future."
