Traveling to crosstown rival Endicott College this evening, Gordon College Women's Basketball had the hot hand in a 90-82 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win over the Gulls. With the win, the Fighting Scots improve to 8-5 and 3-1 in league play, while the Gulls drop to 5-8 and 3-2 in conference action.
For the Scots,
Meghan Foley led the way with a game-high 33 points as well as four assists,
Madison Wynbeek had 18 points and 13 boards,
Olivia Gagnon registered 14 points and three steals, while
Sarah Gibbs had 13 rebounds and 12 points in the victory.
Emily Pratt (Sr./Gardner, Mass.) paced the Gulls' offense with 26 points, Shannon Gilbert (Jr./Easton, Conn.) added 17, while Morgan Bresnahan (So./Wilmington, Mass.) and Kaleigh Putnam (Sr./Wallingford, Conn.) had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
How It Happened
- Freshmen, Gagnon and Wynbeek led the way in the first quarter scoring eight points apiece en route to a 24-13 advantage over the Gulls. It was Gibbs, however, who gave the blue and white their biggest lead of the game as the senior grabbed an offensive board and quickly put it back up to go on top 20-8 with just over a minute remaining in the first.
- With Gordon leading by 13 midway through the second, senior captain, Foley went full steam ahead scoring 11 of the Scots' 13 points to close out the quarter with a 47-33 lead.
- At the 5:37 mark in the third, Foley hit a three-pointer to put the Scots up by 16 before the Gulls began to chip away, cutting the deficit to six points with 2:17 left in the frame. However, Gordon was not going to allow the Gulls to get any closer as Serianna Anderson and Foley teamed up to outscore the Gulls, 9-3 down the stretch to regain a double-digit lead (73-61) heading into the final quarter.
- Endicott continued to battle in the fourth, coming within three points with 3:13 left in regulation. With 58 seconds on the clock, Wynbeek was clutch, successfully converting an "and one" to give the Scots a five-point cushion. The remainder of the quarter was held at the charity stripe with Gordon hitting the 90-point threshold with the 90-82 win over the Gulls.
Beyond The Box Score
- With her 33 points tonight, Meghan Foley is now second on Gordon Women's Basketball's all-time scorers list with 1,452 points in her career.
- Madison Wynbeek had a career night, as the freshman recorded her first double as well as career-high numbers in points (18) and rebounds (13).Â
- It has been almost exactly 10 years since the Scots' last 90-point performance, a 90-62 win over Curry on January 23, 2010.
- The Scots have now won the last two matchups against Endicott with both being on the road.
- Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: "Our offensive production really came to life tonight. Ninety points, four players in double figures and another one on the cusp was a good indication of that. Every time Endicott made a run we had a player step up and bury a shot or get to the free throw line. Madison, Sarah, Olivia and Serianna were lights out while Meghan Foley was simply remarkable. Her offensive creativity is so much fun to watch. I was also stoked that our offensive success was mirrored by our bench energy and focus. This was a really nice win for us and I hope it's a catalyst for continued growth."
