Scots Rally Past Hawks With Dominant Fourth Quarter Performance

Hosting the Roger Williams University Hawks tonight at the Bennett Center, Gordon College Women's Basketball outscored the Hawks, 25-8 in the final quarter to take a huge come from behind 58-56 victory. The Fighting Scots improve to 13-8 (8-5 CCC), while RWU falls to 14-9 and 10-4 in league action.

For the victors, Meghan Foley booked 24 points, five rebounds, and four steals, Serianna Anderson added nine points, Olivia Gagnon had eight points, Sarah Gibbs grabbed nine rebounds and scored eight points, while Madison Wynbeek had eight rebounds and six points in the win.

Karli Opalka (So./Southbury, Conn.) registered 16 points and seven rebounds, Sam Leone (Sr./Ashland, Mass.) had 15 points and six rebounds, while Kendi Barnard (Fr./Bedford, N.H.) had nine boards and eight points.

How It Happened
  • It was a low scoring affair early as the Scots led 6-5 with 2:51 left in the first. Both sides traded points for the remainder of the frame with Jess Wall hitting a late layup to give her squad a 14-13 lead after one.
  • The Hawks used a 15-0 run in the second to go on top 29-18 at the break.
  • Foley and Gagnon paced the offense in the third but the Hawks continued their steady offense, leading by as many as 16 before taking a 15-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Scots used the three-point ball early in the fourth to cut the deficit to just six points with just over seven minutes remaining.
  • With 2:51 left on the clock, Foley hit the dagger to give the Scots their first lead since the first quarter, 55-54. The senior drained another jumper less than 60 seconds later to extend the Scots' lead to three.
  • Opalka went 2-2 at the charity stripe with 1:10 to go to make it a one-point game.
  • With just 18 ticks left on the clock, Wall hit a free throw to give Gordon a much needed two-point cushion. The Scots locked down on defense on RWU's final possession to earn the gritty 58-56 win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Tonight's W marks the first for GCWB against Roger Williams since January 12, 2012. The Scots also snapped RWU's current five-game win streak.
  • All five starters booked two or more assists on the night.
  • This is the first time that the men's and women's team swept the Hawks since 2012.
  • Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: "This was an unbelievably gutty win by our players. I was so impressed with their resilience in the fourth quarter. It felt like we were playing uphill all night long, especially when we were down fifteen at the end of three. But we opened the quarter with Olivia Gagnon's three point shot and then capitalized on seven of our first eight or nine offensive possessions. You could see our confidence growing as we chipped away at their lead and it was such a special moment when Meghan Foley buried a three that finally put us ahead. There were huge plays throughout the fourth quarter, from Serianna Anderson's two huge FT's to put us within two and Jess Wall's two gigantic offensive rebounds that got her to the foul line and many, many defensive stops by the team. I'm so proud of our player's effort and persistence and belief  - they were incredible tonight!"
