Scots Sweep Wildcats In Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After having Monday off, Gordon College Baseball returned to the diamond to face the Cazenovia College Wildcats at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium today where the Fighting Scots swept the Wildcats, 6-3 in game one before taking the 7-1 win in the second game.

Game One:
  • Lead-off hitter John Lagerfeldt found himself quickly on first after earning a walk before utilizing his speed to slide into third two batters later thanks to a pair of stolen bases from the senior. Matt Paulsen did what he had to do and belted a double down the left field line to give his team the early lead.
  • With one down in the home half of the second, Hunter Routhier tagged a ground rule double over the right field fence to put himself in scoring position. Mike Oley knocked Routhier in with a single to the left side to extend the Scots' lead to two.
  • Cazenovia's Kamm Cassidy (Jr./Lake Placid, N.Y.) hit a single to left allowing Anthony Cretella (Fr./Wallingford, Conn.) to cross the plate to cut Gordon's lead in half in the top of the third.
  • The Scots brought two more runs in in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a tri oof walks as well as a Lagerfeldt single.
  • Timothy Oh laid down a squeeze to fluster the Cazenovia infield to score Jaylen Coyne-Martinez to make the score, 5-1.
  • The Wildcats then took advantage of a few Scot miscues to cut the deficit to 5-3.
  • Lagerfeldt led off the home half of the sixth with a bloop double down the right field line. Teammates Oley and Matt Paulsen each sacrificed themselves to bring Lagerfeldt home. Oley moved Lagerfeldt to third on a sac bunt before Paulsen muscled a deep fly ball to straight away center to extend Gordon's lead to 6-3 heading into the seventh.
  • After Dan Ensign pitched a 6.0 inning gem, only surrendering four hits, Nico Gennari stepped in to lock it up for the blue and white. Gennari did just that as the senior didn't allow a hit and secured the 6-3 victory.
Game Two:
  • After Lagerfeldt already gave the Scots a 1-0 lead after one, the senior crossed home again along with teammate Patrick Seigh in the third to make it 3-0. In the home half of that inning, Dan Freese (Sr./Greece, N.Y.) doubled in a run to put the Wildcats on the board.
  • Despite having a comfortable 3-1 lead, Gordon continued to build on their lead as the Scots scored two in the fourth and once in the fifth as well as the sixth to bring home the 7-1 victory.
  • Getting the win on the mound for the Scots was Reid Golhke who went the distance, allowing just four hits, one run, while fanning six batters.
