Facing a first inning 6-0 deficit, Gordon College Softball defied the odds and mounted an impressive comeback over Delaware Valley University to book the first win of the early 2020 season, 10-8. In the second contest of the night, Swarthmore bested the Fighting Scots by a score of 11-1.
Game One:
- The Scots found themselves in an early hole after a 1-2-3 top of the inning and a sluggish defensive start led to a six-run offensive explosion from the Aggies.
- That 6-0 deficit remained until the top of the third when Little reached on an error to score DuBois and break the Scots' scoreless silence to make it a 6-1 ballgame.
- Gordon inched ever closer two innings later when Little doubled to left to score DuBois and Bieren singled to center to plate Benner and close the gap to 6-3.
- Despite Gordon gaining even more ground in the sixth (6-5), the Aggies got their bats going again in the bottom half to widen the gap to three behind RBI from Morghan Fleisher (Fr./East Windsore, N.J.) and Jessica Stewart (Fr./Aston, Pa.).
- With a do-or-die final inning before them, the Scots proved their determination when Little lead-off doubled to right in the top of the seventh to ignite a five-run flurry for her Scots. DuBois gave the Scots the go ahead runs with a two-run blast to put the Scots on top 10-8 and secure an eventual two-run victory.
Game Two:
- In the night cap, the Swarthmore College Garnets' bats were on fire early. The Garnets already crossed the plate once before Gwen Glatz (So./Exeter, Pa.) hit a two-run blast over the center field fence to make it 3-0. Their bats continued to stay hot as they scored four more times to take a 7-0 lead.Â
- An inning later, the Garnets continued to build on their lead, scoring three in the top of the third.Â
- With two down in the bottom of the third, Little ripped a single up the middle before crossing the plate to put Gordon on the board thanks to some patience at the plate that resulted in a trio of walks.
- Swarthmore was able to tack on one more run to make it 11-1 and end the game in five innings.
The Scots hit the field again tomorrow with a 9:15 a.m. game against Carthage and then an 11:30 a.m. first pitch against UMass Dartmouth.
